Description
- July 2014- Ink on paper, digital coloring and text
This is my 1st of 2 separate entries in the "Books into Disney Movies" contest at
"The Time Machine" is a novel by H.G. Wells and one of my favorite books of all time, so I couldn't resist doing this for the contest. It starts in the Victorian era (around 1899) where an inventor builds a machine that allows him to travel through the 4th dimension...time. Fast forwarding through time, he ends up 800,000 years in the future! In this dystopian future, the humans have evolved into two separate races, the surface-dwelling Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks. While learning of the Eloi society, the sneaky and scary Morlocks steal his time machine...then the REAL adventure begins.
Characters in the poster I've created (left to right):
* The Time Traveler - The main character's actual name is never mentioned in the book. He's simply referred to as the "Time Traveler". He's the young inventor from Victorian England.
* Weena - She's the adventurous Eloi, and love interest for the Time Traveler.
* Dox - Short for "Paradox", this little character I created myself and DOES NOT appear in the book. (I figure all Disney animated features need a silly "comic relief" character.) He's a robot that the Time Traveler invented that happens to travel with him to the future.
* The Morlocks - The monstrous creatures in the background are the "enemies" in the book.
The entire "movie poster" was drawn by me, except the Disney logo and the text I used for the title (the font is called "Terran").
I'm thinking some day I may animate this myself, or illustrate it in comic book form. I don't know. Hope you like!

Oh no! Not the Disney Time Machine! It would be even worse than previous ones, with all those peaceful clever Eloi (which in book were described as completely brainless and without even the hints of compassion), and stupid monstrous Morlocks (which in book were actually clever and social, and, in fact, never actually attempted to harm the Time Traveller). No-no-no!

Great concept! Somehow I supposed the Eloi went barefoot however.

Very much how a disneyfied Time Machine would look, well done!Β Great artwork.Β A lot of Disney heroines tend to have girlish rather than womanly figures and that fits well with Weena, since the Eloi are supposed to be neotenous - they don't need further cutesifying.

actually I think weena would actually be the comedy relif sidekick because that's what she was in the book

My favorite version of this story and/or film is the one with Rod Taylor in it.

Huh... Interesting idea of book.
hm... been awhile since I've read it, though. The Eloi were like monks as well as cattle, and maybe kind'a stupid, right? I might would've designed the Morlocks to look more human, but that might make the movie a little overly dark.
I like the poster. ^_^ Might would've been nice to incorporate the machine in there somehow, though, like an overlay of it in the bg, since it'd be hard to connect the title with the picture for someone who isn't familiar with the book. But I think it looks neat as it is, and it's actiony, which is good.
It'd be neat if you do something with the idea. ^_^ I was thinking something similar with the entry I made. It feels like I was just getting started on the possibilities for the story (despite spending more time thinking about the story than I did trying to draw the entry).

I thought about putting the time machine in there somewhere, but I didn't want to take attention away from the characters. I wanted to keep the whole "running away from the Morlocks" thing the main focal point.

Disney does enjoy their sidekicks, if this was even made into a film, I would just hope that said sidekick did not have a voice that resembled Olaf's. I can't stand that stupid snowman. But anyway, this is a really good poster for a film and sounds like it'd make a good movie. Good luck on turning it into an animation or graphic novel.Β

Thanks. I don't know if I will in fact actually animate it or make it into a comic. That would be quite a project. But, I'm hoping someday.

Awesomeness. The bad guys in the back add a lot of excitement to the piece. Weena looks beautiful.
It's great how you added a silly sidekick into the mix. After all no Disney movie is complete without one.

Your character designs look really cool. I especially like Weena. Also, I laughed when I saw Dox. Disney would totally put in a cute comic relief robot for the kids!

Ooooooh Steampunk-y H.G. Wells novel? while it would take just a bit of work (like the awkward fact that the Morlocks are cannibals to some degree) to make it Disney-Safe I would watch the daylights out of it! Great work and I love the creepy Morlocks in the back! Also cute little robot is cute XD

Ooh, good touch adding the robot sidekick. Β And it's not too far of a stretch either, I'm sure the Traveler, as a scientist, would want to invent someone to share his adventures with (until he meets his girlfriend, of course).

OH MY GOSH! I read that book before from my local liberty! I love your new character, Dox the robot as a Disney sidekick! Very creative!
Good luck in the contest with this, because this is very out-of-the-box creative!

Hero, love interest, plucky comic relief, obviously evil antagonists? Yep, this is the fixin's for a great Disney movie. Those morlocks look really scary though. And great work on the foreshortening of the time travellers leg as well; I don't know, but foreshortening is really difficult for me, and whenever I see someone else do it correctly, I get really excited, and appreciate how much effort goes into getting it right.

oohh this sounds very interesting if this would become a movie I think it would full of adventures. What I love in this poster that you're able to showcase the important characters, I think Dox has the same personality of B.E.N.

That's very interesting. I like the idea of picking non-children books and adapting to a Disney format.
Great job.
I wonder if your second entry will be War of the Worlds
(PS. I've just realised you've already posted your second entry, but I'm keeping this here because reasons)

If I were writing a movie about the Time Machine with this set-up, I'd soon reveal the Morlocks attempting to reverse-engineer it, keep the twist that the Morlocks are the descendants of the 99%

Yay, one of my favorite books is hereΒ
I like how you draw different characters and expressions. The shadows from behind make the atmosphere look mysterious and thrilling
and finally, the new robot as a comic relief character is a great choice too!
good luck!!

at this time disney has to bring back 2d animation and also give us The Making of Frozen For rEAL instead of a Musical Prank
