Description
SPOILERS FOR LABYRINTH MANGA PLEASE DO NOT LOOK/READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILEDSo. The fact of the matter. I read the first two volumes ages ago. I'm still waiting for volume 3. For those who don't know and want to, here's how it goes:
The manga cover art is gorgeous. The actual art, not so much. But the story is worth it. The first volume goes by slow but ends on a cliffhanger that makes you want the second. The second is AWE.SOME.
General situation: The manga takes place 13 or so years after the events of Labyrinth. Sarah is a high school English teacher (I shit you not, I laughed myself stupid) and doesn't play a huge role. Yet. The story is mostly centered around Toby, who is the age Sarah was during the film. Sarah's stepmother (Toby's mother) actually did turn out to be a bit of a bitch, and Sarah basically raised Toby. He got into fantasy crap, just like her. Merlin (the dog) has died, but Sarah now has a cat named Morgan (yay for Arthurian references!). Toby (in a both positive and negative way--because that's just Jareth for you) has had all his wishes come true. Upset by how badly they turn out, he doesn't want them anymore. He meets Jareth, not knowing who he is, briefly. Then, in an attempt to do his homework (not actually having Sarah do it for him), it gets stolen by a goblin and is lured into the Labyrinth. Adventures following he makes himself a few friends. A wingless fairy, a cub of the same race as Ludo, and a human girl with dark skin and pale hair that wears a goblin mask (because she wants to be a goblin) named Moppet (haha Jim Henson people--FAIL). She has a crush on the captain of the goblin guard (I shit you not). As the story progresses lots of cool shit happens. Including a) Toby has magic (probably from his stint as a baby in the Goblin City), b) Jareth has evil Japanese neighbors (yay for bad fan fiction-like stuff), c) Toby seems to get a crush on Moppet, and d) Toby starts to figure out that he's been here before but he has no idea how and his history starts to unravel.
The first volume ends with Jareth dubbing Toby the new Goblin King and poofs. Hence the reason why--although I was unimpressed until that moment--I had to read the next volume.
Volume two mostly includes a lot of Toby-Training and trying to figure out his connection to the Goblin City. However, the Jareth flashbacks (and what he actually does in that volume) are FUCKING AWESOME AND HYSTERICAL. Worth the read. The plot REALLY thickens to wonderful levels in volume two.
I won't reveal too much about it, but I will explain the image above. Sarah is grading essays (I. SHIT. YOU. NOT.) during a storm, is hungry, poor (she only has food for the cat), starts to make herself tea (the wrong kind, also a gag in the book--READ IT), and gets a knock at the door during the storm.
She opens the door to Jareth standing there saying, "Hello, Sarah."
With that kind of fucking cliffhanger the WAIT for the next volume has been TORTUROUS. But I rather them NOT FUCK IT UP (because they've set this up so well) and delay it, than give me crap.
So because of that cliffhanger, and the long wait that ensued since reading it, I could only cope with it by doing a series of gag comics based around Sarah's reactions to seeing the Goblin King at her front door. From what's gathered in the volumes, she's put the stuff in the Labyrinth behind her and has never told Toby about it (why would she? She wished him away- I wouldn't tell my kid brother that I raised and loved to all hell THAT).
So having Jareth at her door is sure to come as a bit of a shock.
Left to right. First panel, second panel, then panel below it, then last panel. Yes, I suck at comic organization.
Also: I LOVE THE FLOOFY SLIPPERS.
