STORY

Ana had been training for years with a goal to compete professionally so she can quit her day job and focus on riding full-time. She spent every afternoon she had free training at HPR with Lucy , and had competed in some local Australian shows prior, but this was her first opportunity to compete internationally. She was still jetlagged from the time difference between America and her home, but she had chugged an energy drink in the morning and was awake as she could be.

She spent the morning of the event watching the other divisions compete and watched as the clouds rolled in, darkening as it drew closer to her turn. She watched as each competitor before her galloped through the course, digging up the grass and leaving the run more and more slippery and muddy.

As the rain came in heavier just passed noon, it was Ana's time to compete. Lucy seemed a little agitated by the rain hitting her face and was flicking her tail with a whole lot of attitude. Ana gently stroked her neck, hushing her in a soothing tone.
"C'mon, let's get'em."

She mounted up and walked over to the starting position. She took a deep breath, clenched her reins, the leather squeaking against her gloves, and pushed Lucy into action. They were off to a slow start, Lucy slowing down every now and then during slippery patches of the course. Ana knew if they wanted to have a chance of placing, she needed to push harder. The rain felt like hail as they galloped faster, Ana squinted to get a better view of the course as the water clouded her vision. Before she had time to slow down, she noticed a brush jump right in front of them, right at the top of a down bank.

"Shit." Ana inhaled sharply through gritted teeth as she pulled back on the reins in a vain attempt to slow Lucy, however, she had already committed. Lucy pushed off and her hooves left the ground as they swooped over the jump. Ana felt her stomach lurch as she leaned back to stabilise herself. Lucy's hooves connected with the ground below, skidding and searching for the friction she needed to stay upright.

Every muscle in Ana's body was tensed and time felt like it was running in slow motion. Somehow, by some miracle, Lucy managed to slow down to a gentle canter, slipping and sliding until they reached a patch of firmer ground.

A long-awaited breath finally released as Ana puffed through pursed lips, quickly shaking her head to get back in the game. If they could manage that, they could manage the rest.
