PS - I hope to see your version soon! it will be much better for sure

Oh, and I'm pretty disappointed about what "Bird-club" does with photos that go to submition - my plover photo looks really bad there :-/

What do you mean? The resized thumbnail compresses and distorts the image ... but that happens to everyone.

Well,I mean when I opened a pic uploaded by club it lookes terrible... - it was resized and compressed, it's a pity they do it to every pic :-/ they can resize a bit but not to size of small thumbnail...

when we upload pictures to the club, we save the small unzoomed version of each deviation.. this helps prevent art theft

I know something about this... a bunch of feathers or water drops on tens of photos

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to Photosbykev [2007-08-27 21:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, thank you very much Kevin! the only problem is that it is a crop, huge crop, so I can't do print, although I whish to hang it onto wall over my bed
Anyway I was really lucky with this one - finding huge field with THOUSANDS! ( I MEAN it! ) swallows and... one puddle... just sit and wait.
I had to forget about AF, no camera would handle it. And I had to set 200mm on my 70-300 zoom as having 3fps it was impossible to soot-in the shallow DoF @300mm. I whish it was full-frame...

I've been trying with my 600mm lmao and failing!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to Photosbykev [2007-08-27 21:33:13 +0000 UTC]

wow! at 600 I do understand why you failed
Swallows are cosmopolitans almost, they do not afraid of human so much so I think such a focal length is not necessary, even troublesome... I'm pretty sure that 300mm would be enough. I took this shot with no camo, they were REALLY close... now whith you camo and some bright 300mm and 8fps it should be a bit easier...

Photosbykev In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-08-27 21:40:20 +0000 UTC]

The place I shoot at is on a lake not a puddle so I need the reach of the 600mm. also they tend to drink anywhere so it's fun trying to track them. No camo just sitting on the side of the lake enjoying watching them

Oh, I understand now... then, yes, it must something completely different, far more difficult. Good luck anyway...
BTW - have you ever thought of catching a stern hitting water surface? this must be SOMETHING...

Photosbykev In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-08-27 21:57:19 +0000 UTC]

an artic Tern? They are in the same place

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to Photosbykev [2007-08-27 22:04:02 +0000 UTC]

Well... I mean any tern ( mostly common tern )... I'm really charmed by the view of tern hovering in the air for a second and the falling down as an arrow to the water and hitting it as rock... so fast and graceful! I've seen some nature movie in TV showing some birds diong it by they weren't terns...

WOW!!!! I am impressed by the sharpness of this photo...What lens do you use? I need one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to houstonryan [2007-08-22 21:20:22 +0000 UTC]

It was just sigma 70-300 Apo, but stopped down to f:11 - it's already huge crop so yes, it is really sharp.

Tnanks for the info...I think I need to get a tripod and use smaller apertures...My images are too blurry...of course my 300mm lens is a prophoto lens, and not that great.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to houstonryan [2007-08-23 06:36:27 +0000 UTC]

Actually I don't use tripod I know I should but I;ve got only old shaky tripod I use fro "family shots". What lens exactly do you have?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

houstonryan In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-08-23 15:40:33 +0000 UTC]

I think it is a ProPhoto 5.6 300mm lens...it was only $249 and has some chromatic aberration (magenta/blue on fringes)...I couldn't afford anything better as I had just purchased the D200...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to houstonryan [2007-08-23 20:58:03 +0000 UTC]

I see, well it would be absolutely enough for you to buy some 300/4, I'm going to doit in some near future. And 300/5.6 is not a pro rather prime if meant that. Pro is 2.8

houstonryan In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-08-24 00:35:40 +0000 UTC]

I thought the brand was prophoto...not the lens...
