This is once again really inspiring shot. It's almost impossible to take a picture like this, but here's proof that it's possible. I were quite certain that you attemted to take this shot in just one place where some birds usually fly by, and seems that I was quite right. Brilliant!

Thankyou very much yes being in one place is what gets me 80% of my shots. I learn't a few
years back you can't chase wild birds and animals, get as close as you can and let them accept you.
once that has happened they get back to what they were doing and thats when the best moments and
chances happen.

Yes, that's so true. At last I'm starting to understand that too. Maybe some hiding tent would a good think to buy.

Well it certainly works for me funny thing is i've never used a hide, gave it a lot of thought and no doubt will
be a must for certain species of birds. its the restrictions that keep me away from hides, no doubt i could see the birds
but would i have the freedom to get the angles to get the shots i often take, thats what stops me.

yeah definitely, think people would have got a bit bored with rossi-stoner constantly! although if lorenzo wins im never happy because HE's never happy, grumpy sod has just won a race and all you get is a smirk! lol

I was getting so board of seeing stoner and the Ducati rideing away from everybody. no battleing or raceing involved.
i know what ya mean about Lorenzo, very smugg and pedrosa is like a thunderbird puppet off the bike LOL. Thats rossi's
best attribute, he still Loves it no matter how many wins and titles, every race he wants to win and allways respects
the crowds and fans. he is and will allways be the greatest motorcycle racer.

Im glad ya enjoying the shots, im having a cracking time taking them.

Excellent!
(Perfect focus and shutter speed)
Could you describe your technique please?
Or did you just use your time machine again?

THEDOC4 In reply to WestLothian [2009-05-04 17:27:56 +0000 UTC]
Cheers!!!!! HaHa time machine, i like it my technique is a mixture, observation and understanding of the subjects are a big part. Know both the limits
of your equipments Af systems and know how your subject flys, wing beats etc etc and try to make them both fit together. I spent a hour around the farm yard watching the Swallows, where they were flying about and take off/landing from. i spotted one pair using a barn as a nest site, i also noticed they were using a workman like flight path in and out of the barn and quite frequent. so i set myself up on a as level focul plane to there flight path in/out as i could, eliminting as many different focul planes as possible and also to get the longest path i could for shooting. That way i could have a few attempts and check the shots and adjust where needed and have another go.

There are some that set the camera to the "Gattling Gun" 10 frames per second with dynamic AF 21 points and hope for a good one.
There's also the scientific, trap-focus setting, assigning the exact focal plane and holding down the release waiting for a fly-through.
Your technique has used all the advantages of observation and noting the behaviour to make the random movement more predictable.
I feel I should go back to my local swallow barn again, re-inspired!
Thanks.

Yes there are many ways and techniques to attain a similar shot at high speed. I have tried and experimented with a few
of the methods you mention over the years. but found they rely on to much planning and tend to only work in very narrow
windows and circumstances, something that really doesn't suit wild bird photography.
Plus i love to shoot off the cuff, i love to be able to spot something and quickly be able to calculate a shot from what im seeing
and have a go at it. Observation and knowledge are key too, best examples are my Crow and magpie shots where i have watched them
very closely and undertstand and know the flight patterns very well, it then gives you the ability to anticipate there next move and
be there as it happens not after it as gone!!!!! im adopting that same principle for the swallows. Happy hunting.
