Fantastic shot, I love how the wingtips are pointed outward and the tail is pushed down. They're such beautyfull birds!

This is simply stunning David. I'm a big fan of the crow family, very attractive underappreciated birds. I'm off to Gigrin next week and I'm as excited about seeing the Ravens as I am the Red Kites.

Thanks nitsch yes a bird most people frown on, me i think theyre great and make fantastic subjects.
Sounds like that should be a great trip!!! Raven and Red Kites, two birds im really wanting to shoot. i look
foward to seeing your and no doubt will make me realise what im missing. Hope you get the light and action

That looks like a very fast shutter speed!
An excellent point to freeze the flight too.

THEDOC4 In reply to WestLothian [2009-03-19 17:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes 1/2000sec that was took, a good shutter for most situations.

WestLothian In reply to THEDOC4 [2009-03-19 17:47:46 +0000 UTC]

A great shutter for the available amount of light on a black bird.
I think it's a bright day when I get past 1/125 here.

THEDOC4 In reply to WestLothian [2009-03-19 17:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes its about as high as i go for crows for that reason. the only downer of photography is never knowing what else is behind the shot.
The one thing i do is let the light dictate where i shoot, on any given day or time im allways where the lights good enough to shoot at
very good settings, I work on the principle as if anything happens where i am i can get a good shot, instead of being in a place
where lights limited and so are shooting options.

WestLothian In reply to THEDOC4 [2009-03-19 18:32:51 +0000 UTC]

I should try and follow that good advice.
There is nothing more frustrating than
reviewing dark, high ISO pictures,
shot at 1/60 - all noise no feathers!

THEDOC4 In reply to WestLothian [2009-03-19 21:13:20 +0000 UTC]

well it works for me, the best tip i could give you is use your shadow like a compass. if you line a subject directly in line with your own shadow so its 12 o'clock facing thats perfect straight light giving you the best exposure options for a typical nice colourfull low noise sharp picture. i do this as much as i can my pigeaon shot landing flush [link] is a perfect example of me using it to get a perfect light and optimum exposure in a wild situations.

Thankyou very much, im glad you like how i capture birds, i've allways been fascinated with birds right from a kid. The camera
is the perfect tool for watching and capturing them with.

Great shot!!! Did you use AI servo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THEDOC4 In reply to The-Kot [2009-03-19 08:09:44 +0000 UTC]

Cheers!!!!! i do use AI servo quite a lot but find its not capabable of giving consistant results with head on subjects
going pretty fast, i've found its best to hook em up with the AI and make a subtle adjustment just infront and shoot
as it comes into that focus region, that doesn't allways work to i might add but it does get me these kind of results.

The-Kot In reply to THEDOC4 [2009-03-19 08:18:52 +0000 UTC]

I have to try it, because I haven't any method to "shoot" flying bird I think that my Canon 70-300 IS USM is not very bad...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THEDOC4 In reply to The-Kot [2009-03-19 08:27:51 +0000 UTC]

Well its something i've been doing a few years on and off and is a gamble, there are certain limits to any autofocus system
especially head on, like it might hook up on a wing giving a soft head etc etc, thats why its nice to overide and just try and judge it the old fashion way LOL

Thanks, Crows make such interesting subjects i think, there plumage is fantastic!!!! especially the Iridescence optical effects
it gives off, from the blues/purples to the Green/silvers.

Thankyou very much well if you keep at it im sure you will Im on my 5th year on photography now and still learning
new things every day, about the camera and the birds im shooting. Don't be put off with bad exposures and blurs, just try to understand
why and what made them turn out that way and correct it, bit by bit you will build your knowledge and understanding until you get
fewer mistakes and more consistency, thats been my approach. its hard to run before you can walk!!!!

abikeOdyssey In reply to THEDOC4 [2009-03-18 21:18:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'll take that to heart...and that's what I'm doing, I've been filling up two memory cards+ a day and wading through them to find the best...I learn new stuff every ten minutes it seems!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THEDOC4 In reply to abikeOdyssey [2009-03-19 08:17:22 +0000 UTC]

Well that sounds very familiar LOL i never flinch at taking lots of shots, its the way to learn. Gulls are very good
for learning on, lots of them!!!!!! very close!!! and very agile. I allways use them to experiment on, As a example
i shot them this year experimenting on Shutters speeds, from 1/2000 to 1/5000 just to see what trade offs i got against each other.
all what i learn't i've allready started applying to other species and can see the results.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

abikeOdyssey In reply to THEDOC4 [2009-03-19 14:48:33 +0000 UTC]

That makes a lot of sense...unfortunately there's a shortage of good gull habitat around here. I grew up in WI near Green Bay and Lake Michigan and always had a ton of them around, but now I live far from water and the guls are more well-spaced. I'm sure I will find some sometime though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THEDOC4 In reply to abikeOdyssey [2009-03-19 14:59:36 +0000 UTC]

well i would just find the most common and abundant species of bird you can and fire away on those. I say to myself when that day comes and im
confronted with something special, like say a Sparrow hawk plucking its kill. I want to know what to do and how to do it in a instant beacurse thats all i will ever get. be prepared and ready to anticipate anything , anytime. thats allways my approach.

Very nice shot!!! Huge fan of Crows and Raven. They are one of the hardest to get nice lighting on to get this kind of capture.
Is there a link or spot that I might go to see the equipment you use to get this level of shot?

Thank you,
Kevin

THEDOC4 In reply to deviant-art-guy [2009-03-18 20:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks yes Crows are difficult subjects to photograph, i been covering them for quite while and sussed how important the light/direction
and time of day make to a exposure, the height of the bird is important too especially for revealing more detail i've found.
I haven't any link to my gear but this was taken with a Nikon D300 with a Sigma F2.8 APO HSM 300mm Tele 1/2000sec ISO400 F4
If i had to say one thing whats getting the quality its the len's i've had 3 different bodys on that lens and it has allways
gave me the same performance, from my D1X D2Xs and now my D300.

Thank you very much for the reply. I'm slowly getting into photography so that someday I can take better ref pics for my own artwork. I"m working with older equip right now buts its fine for learning. I am working with the original Nikon D1 (yes you heard me right) and a new Nikor 18-200VR lens. I'm happy with it so far but saving up for a D90 and a lens to get me a little closer. Its a far cry from the lens your using but you gave me something to shoot for.
Thank you once again for the info. Its nice to know the equipment behind the artist.

No problem, anytime Ah the D1X!!!!! my first DSLR, i still have it, im one of those who never part with anything LOL. a very good
camera but obviously is outdated by todays standards, the quality is still there but the functionality and everything else has come a
long way since then, but it will capture excellent photographs for sure.I can understand your wanting to use the camera for the ref
material, your artwork is outstanding your right to identify the lens, becaurse most people get wrapped up in the camera's
abilities but musn't forget the quality of the glass thats translating that to the camera for the picture. Thats why you can pay 20K
for a lens and 5K for a body.

deviant-art-guy In reply to THEDOC4 [2009-03-20 15:46:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes I am enjoying the D1 but the size of the file being 4x6 is a tad small for me. Genuine fractals works nice but is limited.
Do you work with teleconverters on your 200mm(huge) lens? I read on Moose Petersens blog that he does with his 300mmf2.

Thank you also for the kind words about my art. I would love to works from one of your shots some day. I just finished an eagle using "GuitarJohnnys" ref that I'll be uploading here.
Sorry I guess I should have sent a note instead of reply on this message.
Thansk again,
Kevin

THEDOC4 In reply to deviant-art-guy [2009-03-20 22:55:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes i get ya on the D1, yes i do use converters on all my lens. Hardley at all these days as im allways after the fast action.
thats the trade off got the range but not the speed. I use them when i need to and with good light its possible to get very good
quality, again its the light. D1X&300mmf2.8 x2 [link]

I think i know the Eagle shot of"GuitarJohnnys" he has a shot that immediatly springs to mind, i look forward to seeing that.
Well kevin if you ever want to draw one the answer is yes before you start lol very photo realistic stlye, especially "on the prowl"
