Well, in my opinion, at least Final Fantasy VII's story line and love doesn't look like some fanfic a forty-year-old FF7 fan made in their parents basement. Besides, Aerith hadn't seen him in five years. She moved on. Don't go with Crisis Core's story line, the game is what really happened.
Anyhow, why ship Cloud and Tifa when Cloud truly loves Aerith? It's like teasing a baby with it's toy you've taken away.

First off, dude, Tifa is 20, Cloud is 21 and Aerith is 22, so what the hell Tifa is too young for Cloud then. Why is the Claerith paring so cringe-worthy? Emo Cloud = Cloud burdened by guilt coupled with, in Advent Children at least, a degenerative and lethal disease. Even when not depressed or ill the real Cloud is pretty diffident though. Here's what's going to happen: Cloud will continue to live with Tifa, possibly continuing his job and raise Denzal and Marlene, but no affection will be shown towards her. Look at their screwed up relationship is Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and tell me something's gonna happen.
