I think this would look much better if the sky wasn't overexposed. If the sky was just too bright, HDR would have been an option.

First, a belated thanks for the comment!
And yes, you're probably right about the sky. It was bright, but I guess I should be able to get around that if I really think before I shoot and start to learn the camera settings better. (I'm still a newbie when it comes to any kind of more advanced photography.) HDR on the other hand, while it certainly can produce very nice results, doesn't really feel like my thing. Partly because it feels advanced to do, but also because I am more of a snapshot photographer after all.

I see. Well, in that case you might be better off with a grad filter. A polarizer can also help to darken the sky, but only if you're shooting with the sun in your back.
