Description Ornitischian revenge! Edmontosaurus regalis uses its sheer mass to knock and hold down an Albertosaurus while the nasty beak punishes the reckless theropod.

Because hadrosaurs are more than mere cannon fodder and, at the end of the day, size matters.

Thanks to the artist for this picture! More paleo artists should draw this kind of picture. And well done Edmontosaurus! I hate the big headed Tyrannosaurids, and he (Edmontosaurus) might have the same opinion.

Wow. The Edmontosaurus is SO fat.

Awesome! One does not simply mess with a hadrosaur.

Also because tyrannosaurs aren't built to kill things bigger than themselves.Β

I love tyrannosaurs they're my favorite theropod group but the hunts were probably often unsuccessful especially for younger and smaller species like this reckless albertosaurusΒ

so is the Albertosaurus going to die, or...?

Nah. It will leave with a few broken bones and a lesson learned.

Very impressive! It's not common to see Duckbills to defend themselves in this matter, and you've demonstrated the possibility wonderfully.

It's like people saying that packs of wolves can take down a HEALTHY, ADULT bison. That just doesn't happen unless there's like a 20-1 advantage

With tyrannosaurs, it's worse. They were so specialized for bone-crushign that they couldn't bite anything that large compared to themselves. Even a 20+ pack would have no chance. At least an wolf pack can bite something larger than the individual wolves.

As much as I love coelurosaurs, I do love these types of works in which hadrosaurs are shown defending themselves as that would be more realistic than them going down without a fight.

Durbed In reply to Oaglor [2012-08-01 11:09:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! yeah, it makes no sense that such heavily constructed animals are taken down without even putting a fight. All adult hadrosaurs were stronger and heavier in general than any contemporary tyrannosaurid; they certainly weren't dinosaurian sheeps.

What really grinds my gears are dromaeosaurs taking down hadrosaurs hundreds of times their own size in only packs of few. In fact, I came up with a conclusion that the only reason some people think T. rex is a scavenger is because of this raptor cliche.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Durbed In reply to Oaglor [2012-08-01 17:29:34 +0000 UTC]

That's even worse. There's not enough pictures of 20-70 Kg dromaeosaurs receiving a deadly reality check from some multiton ornithopod. Heck, even something twice its weight could kick the butt of any dromaeosaur. Not to mention how dubious is this pack hunting theory alone...

Oaglor In reply to Durbed [2012-08-01 18:58:42 +0000 UTC]

Dromaeosaurs not being able to hunt = T. rex not being able to mainly subsist on scavenging since it was the only large carnivore in its environment.

It's funny how this argument is brought out so often, since juvenile and sub adult speedy tyrannosaurs were probably a much tougher competition for any adult Rex than any deinonychosaur, pack hunter or not. We even have healed bite marks that prove how they went after living prey (and most important of all, usually failed).

And we have many tyrannosaur specimens that have bite marks that belong to other tyrannosaurs.

Durbed In reply to PeteriDish [2012-08-01 10:41:46 +0000 UTC]

Not sure about cracking ones, but surely strong enough to leave some bruise...geese bites are generally nasty, now imagine the same thing with a few tones more.

PeteriDish In reply to Durbed [2012-08-01 15:32:18 +0000 UTC]

depends on which bones you mean. I think the tail bones could maybe give up. And given the big cheek muscles, the bite must've been quite strong.
