Description
There is a lot to say about this picture. So let's get it on!First of all this is my entry for the contest of =kankakanka and *PearlEden . The task was to create a character inspired by one of the four natural elements (fire, water, earth, air). Which brings us to...
the Concept:
So I think it's quite obvious that the element I chose is water. But there is much more about it. For example, I already had the idea for this picture long time before the contest was announced but when I heard about it, my idea just fit perfectly to the theme.
Now let's go into detail. My idea was to not personify the element by a creature made of water. Instead I wanted to get the atmosphere I associate with water into the picture. Therefore I came up with the image of a harper. Why a harp you might ask. The reason is for me water is always playful and fluent and a harp just fits to these characteristics. (If you heared Bedric Smetana's "The Moldau" you might understand this a bit better). When I fixed the harper as my figure the rest developed quickly. It should be a female character because for me water is a female element (not like earth which for example is definately male) and it fits better to the harp. And I chose to give her the form of an anthro otter (yes, it should be an otter) to show the deep and natural connection between the character and the element - plus I think that otters are really cute and get too little attention here at dA
Enough concept, there are also some things about
the Artwork:
Just some information for those who are interested. I know I didn't really succeed to give her an otter-like shape, the head didn't come out as I hoped. But please be gracious, it was my first try. Same goes for the water. I never drew water like this before and it took my a lot of time and nerves to get it even to this stage. So if you have some tipps for me how to draw it better don't hold back. Nevertheless I'm very pleased with the complete work and it was very fun to draw.
And I have to thank `Katmomma who made a wonderful tutorial about colouring browns which helped me really much and inspired me to think more about the colours before applying them. I think I'll follow this path and see where it leads me.

Rounder face and broader nose will make her more otter like.
But she is beautiful

Yeah, you're probably right. As I see you have some kind of expertise on this field. ^^
In any case, thanks a lot!

Oh, I read those books, too. They are excellent.
Maybe they even influenced me a bit in this piece.

They were a great influence on me when I was younger.
I particularly remember Loamhedge.

I only read the first seven books. Outcasts of Redwall was the last. I think Loamhedge and half of the other books from the series weren't even published here in Germany. Kind of sad if you think about it...
Nevertheless they were very inspiring.

Aw, man. I feel bad for you.
Loamhedge was one of my favorites.
But yeah, they were pretty inspiring.
I still love the way he does the accents in the books, so that you have just as much of an idea what the characters are saying as the one they're talking to, lol.

Yeah, the characters and the dialogues are just terrific.
I think I'll try to get the English originals...

Well, life is a process of constant learning, isn't it? It would be quite boring if one had nothing to discover anymore anyway...

Thanks a lot. I know it sounds stupid because everybody says this but it's all about practising. I bet you could do this, too if you worked on your skills long enough.

Well, just one year ago I wouldn't have thought I could actually work with coloured pencils. For years my pictures were just... grey. I'm not saying that I'm good at working with them but I definetly made some progress. That's why I believe that one can learn this stuff.
But I truely understand when people don't want to invest so much time. For me it's the same with photography. I highly admire those people who have an eye for interessting perspectives and details and I'm not persistent enough to learn how to do this.

Well, your age doesn't matter. I've seen a lot of people who were years younger than me and made awesome pictures that beat my own works by far. But inspiration is a hard thing. It can be very frustrating if you want to draw but don't get any idea what. In these cases I advise you to look at other people's art, watch a film, read a book, go out or do everything that gets new pictures on your mind.

Trust me, I know that problem. Even the pic's I would consider to be my best are often not even close to what I had in mind... so I had to learn to adjust my claims to my skills to avoid being unsatisfied with all my works. And now as I improve my skills I raise my personal claims as well. It's my personal way to be happy and satisfied while doing art.

I do really like this picture but to me the two tails look a bit weird!
But you really did a great job though the original looks better than the scanned image

Thank you. As always the scanner kills the colours but I'm happy that this time the scanned image at least gets near to the original.
