The design looks a bit too modern in my option. Then again, they already had robot suits which we still lack in the real world. XD

The only reason we don't have suits like that is because existing weapons render them pointless. It would be like developing a tank when railguns are widespread. In the world of Avatar, those suits, as we've seen, have very little to fear, even from benders.
