Next in the set. Please don't comment on the fact she's jumping in a western saddle.. I realize that isn't good for the horse. -.-;

yeah, I don't think there is anything wrong with jumping in a western saddle. As long as you don't go over anything too big.

The only danger is, like you said, the bra snatcher move, or the horse actually going and stabbing you somewhere. That would leave a nasty little mark lol

Jumping small jumps like that isn't too bad for the horse. My friend has some horses at her house, and though we both compete in English, we'll pop over small jumps like that with her western saddle.

That tail looks really cool.

A western saddle's okay, if it fits properly, it's just a little heavy...

Not much reason for that...the back cinch should be a little snugger against the horse, though. Its purpose, when a western horse jumps or moves suddenly, is to keep the back of the saddle from coming up and then whacking the horse's back when it comes down. It's no use if it's hanging loose (not to mention that many horses get scared by the sudden, unusual pressure of the back cinch if it's loose and the back of the saddle comes up). It may take some time to get them used to it if you've never snugged it up, but it's worth it. Just don't get it too tight, is all. I think...if you can get two fingers underneath, that's fine...

Yeah. That's just so you know. Most people don't know about it, any more...

i love all your pictures you have alot of talent. i work at a tack shop and jumping with a western saddle will not do anything to harm the horse. If it fits properly it will be fine. and in reply to AphoticCrow's comment: yes jumping saddles are made specially for jumping but western saddles more evenly distribute weight along the horses' back. plus they are made to be ridden in all day and are made to be comfortable to the horse and rider. i know my horse has to jump a few ditches when i bring in cattle or other horses. and the bit thing. from what i see the horse has some kind of snaffle bit with a small shank which wont put much pressure on the horses mouth at all. just thought id help out with the saddle confusion...Again awesome gallery

why is jumping western bad for a horse?

any way love the pic ^_^

The saddle isn't really made for jumping. People have different views on the subject.
Basically, in my opinion, no saddle is wrong for jumping, only the rider can be. As long as one doesn't take too high of a leap in a western saddle, no harm can really be done.

If you know jumping in a western saddle is bad for the horse, why do you have all of these pictures of the same person jumping in a western saddle? Why don't you say something? Jumping in a western anything is terrible for the horse, you can't rise out of the saddle and off of their backs, jumping saddles are tiny for a reason. English bits are created for constant pressure without hurting the horse, where western bits are made for very minimal contact. You can't throw a horse over a jump without holding onto the mouth somehow, even in a long crest release.

Sorry if this seems bitchy, but I can't stand seeing people in potentially dangerous situations over and over.

I don't think it's bad for the horse considering the fit of a western saddle is better over-all for a horse's back & withers yadda yadda yadda...

However I personally have had the discomfort of having saddle horns catch under my bra while jumping in proper position & being pulled over my horse's neck by them. Now THAT sucks!

Pretty horse though & awesome shot!

i hadn't realized it was bad for the horse! in fact... i thought it was just something i didn't know you could physically do. the horse looks confident and focused and i think that's all that matters.

It's not that it's bad, it's just it's not good for really high jumps.

LOL! Jumping in a western saddle is fine. If you go trail riding and have to go over a fallen tree you just do. It's not the most comfortable feeling, but you don't have to go off the trail and dig up someone's property.

but jumping western is fine too.
just not too often
it gives them yucky sores and bruises.

i prefer bareback!

Bareback I.M.O. is the best. You gain and maintain the best "seat" for the horse and you.

It's not that bad for the horse. I jump my horse western..and we used to do it our riding stable... I hope it's not too bad for the horse because we all do it alot....(we being my friend and our instructor)

iroxalldatime In reply to Mystykat [2006-12-09 05:51:41 +0000 UTC]

yeah, its just harder for the rider for the two-point position... especially when youre on a horse that likes to jump ten feet above the jump *wince*

Mystykat In reply to iroxalldatime [2006-12-12 00:14:38 +0000 UTC]

My horse doesn't like the tall jumps and doesn't give herself any extra space, just enough to get over the jump and nothing more... She's lazy like that.

DustysDarkRyder In reply to Mystykat [2006-10-03 05:05:27 +0000 UTC]

As long as you're not sailin' over anything too high then you should be fine. And as long as you know how to move with your horse instead of against him/her.

its alright...those are just about as good as ours...and were a jumping barn! haha...all our jumps are chewed up cause their wood and we turn horses out in the arena, and all the paints chippin off...its pretty funny...
and our standards are all broken, and its a balancing act just to keep em up!

hahaha we do that when we try to do the cross country thing at home...barrels, boxes, horse blankets draped over hanging poles, cones, stuffed animals we put anything possible under and on and around jumps, and anything big enough to use ya stick in the arena and we jump it.
