This is fantastic. I love the contrast between the harsh-looking modern city and the brighter, more cheerful, more medieval-looking city. I also love the little bit of story you gave in the description. It really helps give the feeling of contrast. They held the evil of the dark city at bay until dawn and now they're safe.
