Description

For several hours, dozens of pokémon helped to put out the forest fire and defend the wagons. Slowly, but surely, the fires were disappearing, and the wagons were almost out of the forest.

After Alexandra put out one fire, something pale-yellow jumped through the bushes, startling her. “Oh, it’s just you, Francis.” She sighed.

“We’re almost out of Fungal Forest.” He said.

“And the fires are almost out.” She added, smiling. “I think this is becoming a success.”

Just then, there was the sound of rustling bushes and crunching branches. The two pokémon jumped at the sound, and stared at the mushrooms and grass in the direction of the sound; Alexandra’s eyes narrowed, and Francis’s tail and whiskers twitched nervously.

Suddenly, a loud roar sounded. Out of the brush came the dungeon boss himself: the angry breloom.

When he saw the vulpix and meowth, he growled angrily. He knew vulpix were Fire-type pokémon, and thus assumed she had a part in setting fire to his home. And his mind wouldn’t be swayed.

“Oh geez, he’s mad.” Alexandra muttered, beginning to back away slowly. Francis followed suit, his wide blue eyes never leaving the breloom, as it stared critically at them. “Frankie, whatta we got?” Alexandra asked, trying to keep her best friend calm.

“Um, lemme see.” The scratch cat pokémon said, starting to wring his paws. “It’s Grass an-and Fighting type. Fire and Flying are goo—wait. You’re not gonna fight him, are ya?”

“Only if he attacks—“

Roaring, the breloom charged. His left-hand claws glowed brightly, and it suddenly flew forward and up, faster than either opposing pokémon could think, crashing into Alexandra’s chin, and sending her flying up and away into some mushrooms.

Francis gasped, eyes widening, and bit his lip nervously. Before he could move, fire shot out from where the vulpix landed and engulfed the breloom in a tornado of fire. It screeched in pain and anger, and charged forward again, this time attacking Alexandra with Mach Punch. She rolled several times, and jumped to her feet again. Her eyes began glowing gold, and her teeth gritted in concentration.

Francis’s eyes widened. “Alex, no! You don’t know how to use that move!”

She didn’t listen though, and as her eyes glowed brightly like shined gems, she opened her mouth, intending to release the move Extrasensory. However, nothing came out, and her eyes clenched shut, and she held her head in pain. As Francis said, she didn’t know how to fully use Extrasensory, and almost never worked. It either did too much power, too little, or none at all, and almost always gave her a headache after.

Seeing the vulpix distracted, breloom threw his head back, bellowing as his eyes were covered by a third eyelid. White spores were released from his mushroom-like cap, covering the area, including Alexandra and Francis.

Alexandra’s eyes began watering, and began lightly swaying on her feet. Gasping, Francis grabbed up the vulpix and threw her over his shoulder, despite the fact that she was heavier than him, and took off as fast as his legs could carry him, with the breloom chasing after. He didn’t look back, but he could hear its growls and pants as it crushed grass and mushrooms beneath it.

“Must go faster…” Alexandra muttered before passing out from the Spore attack.

Seeing a small break in the trees, Francis got an idea. He ran between two trees, with the breloom followed closely at his heels. The mushroom pokemon got slightly stuck, allowing Francis to escape, giving a last roar at the departing pokémon.

I'm not too pleased with how Alexandra's upper-half turned out, but it didn't look too well on paper, so I decided to take the lazy way out. I'm glad I decided to go Butterfree Rank XD

I DO like how Francis and the Breloom turned out. The burn marks on the latter were done with my Bamboo tablet. I recently dug it out, and was able to install it. It's a few years old, but it still works. I have no experience with it, so it'll be a long time before I'll be using it for actual lineart (at the moment, I use pen tool; the best Photoshop/GIMP tool ever )

At first (for some reason) I had the Breloom standing among mushrooms, but I got a better idea: have him stuck in some trees. He's not permanently stuck, so don't worry (on a slightly-unrelated note, I'm not sure how Mission 0 will end on a whole, like if the forest will be saved, or what will happen to Breloom; that's why he has an ambiguous ending in my mission)

Yes, Alexandra's final line in this part is referenced from Jurassic Park, one of my favorite movies (I'm eager to see Jurassic World ) The way Breloom is drawn in this group vaguely resembles a raptor, so it fits (even though it was a T-Rex that was chasing the group at the time of the original line...)
