Speaking of ingestion ... I see that Soylent (hopefully free of rat feces) is now shipping to early supporters. Judging from the price I think I'll hold off a bit and go the DIY route. Well, at least their video is much slicker. soylent.me/

It's certainly a very image conscious video, trying to be 'scientific'.
I'm still not convinced however. Just because they put all the 'right nutrients' in, doesn't mean that the body can process them. After all that's been one of the arguments against vitamin pills for years.
Cows are feed on 'nutritionally balanced' diets but the meat they produce is not half as tasty or 'nutritional' as that from good old ruminated grass!

I've still not dipped my toes into the Soylent pond, but I am curious about it. At home I rarely cook subsisting on raw veggies and fruit for the most part. 'Course, when I eat out with friends, which seems to be much too frequently, I ingest my share of recently deceased animals. LOL
BTW, there was a recent article in The New Yorker that I found intriguing; particularly because it was well edited unlike most stuff I read on the web. www.newyorker.com/reporting/20…

The thing that stands out most for me in that interview, is the comment about phytochemicals. The 'hidden' macronutrients that are in traditional foodstuffs, particularly plant foods.
When I was studying aroma and other therapies we were taught the value of the holistic or 'whole' approach; and that whilst palliative medicine narrows down and manufactures the active ingredient (e.g. aspirin from salicin), it's invariably the active plus all of the other chemicals in the plant that work together to greater effect (so an infusion of willow bark is probably just as good if not better, albeit slightly harder to obtain these days)

I tend to agree with most of your points ... e.g., IMHO chewing nature's own coca leaves prolly beats snorting cocaine. Although I actually avoid both.
