Buy patterns. Practice, practice, practice. And make mock ups! Use Muslin or a very cheap material that you can use to figure out what you want to alter or adjust as you build your costume, then use the final pieces as your pattern to put the final costume together. Also there are many tutorials out there to aid with costume making and cosplaying specifically :3

Thank you so much! I'll be looking around to see what I can find, though I have a lab coat costume that I might be able to modify if worse comes to worse. I'll at least be able to use it to practice all the little details.
