I think his eyes were in some way hypnotic or magical. Every time she looked into his eyes as he gave an order, she was overwhelmed with submissive impulses that eroded her will completely.

That is the overall gist of it. There's also a non-verbal reveal of Dr. Rapport's identity that a keen-eyed reader might catch (so far I haven't seen anyone pick it out yet), and it may add some extra dimension to the manner of Carol's change.
