I liked these tilings by Escher, too, and you got the hang of it well!

*Looks up the mosiacs* Huh maybe I did see those too. o.O Neat...and I thought I was so original when I was young. XD I'd say the hexagon effect looks good in this one too and I like how the colors add to the layers being obvious.

Hi thanks a lot for the welcome. I like this....The weird thing is I used to draw these when I was young...Not sure how I learned...think it started when I realized I could flip/copy a tiger face on the other side of a page to make it symmetrical in an art book...so I would draw different critters and flip copy them on the other side so there were two sides with the same critters on each side of the paper. It's kinda fun but weird looking haha. This makes me wish I had those old doodles still but think they are long gone. =/ Funny how you probably never ever saw my art yet do the same sorta doodle (I am from Alberta Canada..) I find this very cool but eerie cause of this. XD At least it makes me feel less strange for doodling like this before. As far as the colors go I think it makes it look cuter and less odd in the rainbow one. They do look like plastic toys but I think that makes it more charming kinda reminds me of the old barrel of monkeys too heh.

Sorry about commenting on old art too but this really stood out to me cause of the fact I doodled similarly..

I think this was better in black and white. The way that the shapes blend so perfectly together is absolutely amazing

Wow, absoultely outstanding, i love the concept the coulours everything.
would be interesting to see more hexagons of animals.
although i think i like the sepia better in terms of defining the animals.

More mosaics? Mhm, I could do that. But I think I could make more interesting stuff with other shapes right now. Either way, I'm not really sure if I will be doing more of these in the future. There's a lot more things I wanna try!

I really like the concept in this and you've done a great job arranging the animals as well as creating stylized versions of them. "Fitting" them together must have taken quite a while and it's an effort well worth. You can improve it by playing more with colours and textures to make the whole image more plastic and alive. Personally I'm not a fan of such bright and light colours but they also fit well together and I like that there are some pastel shades as well. Maybe it would work better with darker tones? In general, though, this is brilliant work, very creative!

Thanks for the comment! Actually it only took me a couple (2 or 3 really) of hours spread across two days to make it all fit. I did a sepia version for those who like a more classic color scheme.

This is awesome!!! The colors are so vibrant and make the piece pop. I like all the different animals. It would be really cool if the animals together made a bigger picture. Like made up a heart or something like that.

Does it continue as the circle gets wider?
I'm not sure it does. My first effort at a tessellation was a bit like this-- it all fit together, but without repetition.

I think Escher did one or two pieces that fit together without gaps or overlaps, but didn't repeat-- but they fit inside a simple square, so the square itself could be repeated and therefore fit the definition of tessellation.

Nicely unexpected use of pastel colors.

You know, just because I find inspiration in Escher doesn't mean I have to copy him to the letter. If we had nothing but copycats, the art world would be off much poorer for it.

There's nothing wrong with finding inspiration in other peoples work, but I'll be damned if copying is all I do.

sethness In reply to Dynoboot [2010-07-12 16:33:21 +0000 UTC]

Go finf "straw man" in the dictionary. I wasn't saying you should copy Escher... only that this is not tessellation.

So... judging by your reaction, you only want **compliments** when you say "tell me what you think".

Dynoboot In reply to sethness [2010-07-12 17:46:47 +0000 UTC]

Just because I go in debate about what this is, doesn't mean I don't appreciate your comment, because I do. However, I think it's strange that you mention this is not a tessellation, when I never set it was. I simply wanted to put that right.

I used some of Escher's works as an example (mosaic I and II, btw) and so I mentioned it's inspired by Escher.

Thanks! I'm not really thinking about commercializing my art works outside of deviantART (except for websites, but they're on my other account), but if I ever do, I'll think about t-shirts! I think the other one would be easier to do on t-shirts, as it has less colors, so it's easier when using techniques like screen-printing.

Did something sorta similar to this in my math class; they were tessellations. After finally trying it, I came to appreciate the finesse and skill required to fit all of the pieces perfectly together. I applaud thee, good man.

Yeah, I wanna try some real tessellation someday too, but it's a bit too complicated to get a good figure (or maybe I'm just not trying hard enough).
