If you mention the name Captain Harlock to Most people they wouldn't know what your talking about. In the age of Naruto, Bleach and Death note this character has kind of been lost. whether you know it or not this character has had a big impact on the Japanese animated shows you watch to day. His personality is a character archetype used for a lot of hero's in japan animation. The more well known and obvious references to him is the intro of the first episode of Gurren Lagann and Cowboy Bebop Villain Vicious.The idea For this picture kind of came from me wondering what ever happen to this character no one seems to know who he is and plus he's just plain cool looking
So I figured I'd give him a little of my own spin wile keeping true to the original. I also wanted to make it look like something you'd see on a lot of the current animated shows from japan.

I totally agree with you. He's one of THE legends of anime, and to date there's never been a character quite like him. Fortunately, he got that new movie done recently, so he's back, and more awesome than ever. Or at least the Arcadia is. Endless Odyssey and the original Harlock series were his best incarnations.

Not everything Anime has put out is 'soulless crap'. It's just that the dubbing companies apparently love soulless crap.

I actually saw all the episodes of the 1978 series when it was being subbed by the Live-eviL group, but I still wish for DVDs. ): I recently finished the Endless Odyssey series and really loved it, which is what this piece reminds me of most.

He looks more badass than any Naruto character, Bleach Character or Death Note character that I can list.
From what I can gather, he's a pirate, right? That's just enough win already. To make it better. Cowboy Bebop and Gurren Laggen referencing this interesting man? More than enough to get me to watch this.
Dispite I haven't seen it yet, this would seem like a peace of official art for a new series with him in it... It's very beautiful.

The coloring job is great. It actually looks like a screencap. How did you do the "haze" effect so it looks authentic though? That's been something I've been trying to figure how to do.

Your words are so true, bro. Harlock is one of my favorite classic characters, and it really is a shame that a lot of otaku these days don't know about the classics that played a huge role in the creation of modern anime. I can't tell you how many times I've talked to someone who called themself a hardcore otaku and didn't know what Fist of the North Star is.

I love the way you colored this and put your own style to it 
As much as I like some newer shows like Death note, Gurren Lagann and stuff, Captain Harlock is still at the top of my list. There's no other series like it and Leiji's characters in general are quite special.

Very nice take on the character! I think Leiji Matsumoto is making a comeback, what with Galaxy Express 999 available online, etc, so I wouldn't be surprised if Captain Harlock gains (regains?) in popularity.
