It's actually more insidious than that. See, Joe Quesada became Editor in Chief to Marvel comics. Quesada's papa had sent himself to an early grave via cancer because he was a heavy smoker. As much of a tragedy that was, Quesada forced his Daddy issues on all of Marvel and only rescinded the smoking ban to do a Spider-man story that was basically his life story and to tell why smoking was evil and ruins lives.
