Even though the Disney Corp. does now own the rights to most of the Oz books by Frank L. Baum they do not own the rights to the Wizard of Oz neither the book nor the movie.

Disney did make the "Return to Oz" movie, but they had to pay MGM royalties....FOR THE RUBY SLIPPERS! (In the books it was originally silver. Ruby was chosen for the original movie because it showed COLOR!)

In the first European version of Cinderella (the story originally came from China), she wore slippers may of ermine fur. The problem is, an old word for that in French is "vair", pronounced the same was as "verre" meaning glass. Hence she ended up with glass "slippers." (They used the word for slipper in French, in modern parlance she'd be said to have glass high-heels, ditto for Dorothy's ruby ones, in much of the English speaking word "slipper" now strictly means what the Southern US may call "house shoes") (To add to the confusion, in the Carribean and the Pacific, "slippers" may be a synonym for "flip-flops")
