I don't think making characters do things out of context would do you any good if you want to improve your skills.
Take a 10 second dialogue and try to animate the character there. You will find that just inserting a generic "think animation" is not good.

To me this one was more about timing and trying to keep the form consistent from different angles/visualizing the character as a 3-dimensional object than character acting practice, but animating characters to a piece of dialogue is definitely something I'll be doing in the future!
