Description Sorry to break it to you kiddies.

The loveble orca who we often associate with the movie, "Free Willy" is a vicious and brutal pretador; hence the word, killerwhale.

These are powerful, intelligent and sophisticated hunters that deserve to be respected. In my opinion, they should not be held in captivity as humans can not sustain the needs of these animals in their natural environment. I'm not going into a huge rant about it (as I'm particularly not in any mood to do so) but I was just clearly expressing my statement. However I did want to portray this fact through my art so I decided to illustrate something you don't usually see.

Orcas attacking a Minke whale!

\Twenty-two cetacean species have been recorded as killer whale prey, from examining either stomach contents, scarring on the prey's body, or feeding activity. Groups even attack larger cetaceans such as minke whales, gray whales, and rarely sperm whales or blue whales. Hunting large whales usually takes several hours. Killer whales generally choose to attack young or weak animals instead. However, a group of five or more may attack a healthy adult. When hunting a young whale, a group chases it and its mother until they wear out. Eventually they separate the pair and surround the calf, preventing it from surfacing to breathe, drowning it.

Well actually the name 'Killer whale' came from a translation mistake of the original Spanish name 'Whale killer' into the English language, where the two words were switched.

ANYWHOZERS this still is such an awesome piece. Terrible how it took me a whole year to comment on a secret santa pic of last year. Dang it's nearly christmas here I'm majorly in love with that Minke whale - the details and colouration are so spot on, it looks almost too real. Really nice work on the posing of the main Orca too, and on the reflections of its body on the water's surface. There's only one big issue I got with this painting, and I kid you not, it also took me a year to truly notice And the issue is this: where does the Minke whale go? You can see him 'entering' from about the pecs up, but where is the rest of the body? It couldn't possibly have jumped so high that it'd make a true nosedive, and it would seem more like that it was simply diving back down after taking a breath, but for that to be the case, the rest of the body had to be visible. MYSTERIES :I

I agree with your statement that these aren't Pets or a dog, these are natural pretadors that have been wild since the last Ice age. It is only when Humans have evolved to a certain point that we named them "Orca".

Wonderful job on capturing the mood, the realistic of how the Killers form and then attack, just like that of the National Geographic Documentary "Wolves of the Sea".

Nice as it is, the whale bugs me. Theres no sign of the rest of the body, and for only the head in water makes me think it must have jumped clear out of the water and be splashing back in.

Ebonenee In reply to kurisutaru [2011-12-17 03:36:46 +0000 UTC]

When I was sketching the idea, I did include the rest of the body in the foreground (to give the idea that it was porpoising at a fast speed). However the picture looked too cluttered and the composition didn't look... right. So I made the decision to leave it out.

I think it would have been better if you left it, as this just looks more odd like the heads decapitated and been thrown into the water xD

Beautiful work! I love the clarity involved, even as you make sure to reflect the underwater environment. I especially love the water ripples around the orca nearest us as it breaches the surface. It's lovely, and I enjoy the change in focus from the nearest orca to the ones farther back. It really adds a lot of depth to the picture.

The only other comment I have (and this may be discounted since I'm nowhere near this level of art) is that the minke whale seems to disappear above the water. There's no er.. shadow or color to represent the rest of the whale. Is that how it would truly appear from beneath the surface? I honestly have no idea, but I thought I might mention it. Maybe I'll learn something! xD

I have to admit did scour the internet to find a suitable reference photo, however I could not find one. So had to assume that this is what it would look like I'm almost certain it's incorrect though haha

Thankyou for pointing that out
