The wooden steps squeaked and tensed under his weight as if threatening to break, but they resisted. He felt the ground again. It was just like the last time. He looked around first without using the flashlight, but soon a chill ran down his spine, so he quickly turned on the strong beam and started searching everywhere almost frantically. Nothing happened. A little more at ease and feeling a bit silly for his slight cowardice, he looked around again, but this time with more care and walking around. The boxes were where he had left them, but now they seemed a bit in the way, so piled them up and dragged them around looking for a corner nearby. He saw the nearest wall was right in front of him, so he dragged them there. He pushed them against the wall and turned to his right, when the light beam flashed over something for an instant. He jumped back and lost his balance, almost knocking down the boxes. His heart skipped a beat and started racing as he got up and ran to the stairs, where he almost jumped his entire way back up and ran straight to hold his mother, who was preparing lunch.
-Mooooooooommmm!!!- he yelled on his way. He almost tackled her when he hugged her with all his strength.
-What happened, sweetie?!- she said alarmed.
-I'm...not sure. I saw...something in there.- he said with his face buried against her.
She hugged him and stroked his hair softly. Her steady breathing and warmth soothed his fear. He sighed and felt at ease. Now he hugged her back and kissed her.
-Thanks Mom.-
She smiled.
-Now, will you tell me what happened down there?-
-I was looking around and decided to put the boxes somewhere else so...-
-Wait,- she interrupted. -Why did you want to move the boxes?-
-They were in the way, so I wanted to put them on a corner or something. What does it matter anyway?-
-You're right, sorry. Go on.-
-So...I saw the wall right in front of me. I pushed them there, and when I turned around I saw something on the floor, like an animal or something.-
-Did you see what it was?-
-Well...not really. It was just the instant while I turned around.-
She still looked very puzzled, so he explained his dream too. She now seemed to understand better.
-I see,- she said after a moment, -we should go again together to see what's down there.-
Although her presence was quite reassuring, he still felt a stab of fear deep down his belly. He saw she was looking around at the floor.
-Honey, where's the flashlight?- she asked.
-I...- he said as he looked around too, then he remembered. -I dropped it in there.-
-Oh. Well, then we'll just go there careful not to fall down. I'll go first.-
She tested each step just like he had the first time, and again they threatened to break. Only after she was almost down Jake followed. He was a little faster, since he already knew they were safe. He reached the floor and saw a big black mass moving around very slowly. He followed, more or less going back to where he thought he remembered he had dropped it. When he thought he was more or less in the exact place, he knelt down and started hovering his hands almost touching the floor, hoping to find the flashlight quickly. After a couple of minutes he finally felt the round metallic body, and turned the beam on. His mother was a few feet away, doing the same.
-Found it, Mom,- he said. She straightened up and extended her hand. He handed it over.
-Now, let's see what scared you so much,- she said as she turned the beam towards where he was wearily pointing. There was just walls, spiderwebs, and an occasional leak from a pipe.
-I don't see anything, sweetie,- she said softly. Jake felt strangely unnerved, rather than reassured. He knew he had seen something solid down there. Then he realized he hadn't pointed correctly. He put his hand over hers and directed the light beam until a strange dusty mass appeared, freezing him on the spot.
