That night, Jake dreamed he went down to the basement. He had a flashlight. As he descended, a cold rush blew on his face. It stank of blood and death. He fell off the last step and landed on his back. His heart was racing and the adrenaline was running quickly to his head. The impenetrable darkness surrounded him. He took the flashlight and turned it on. The light beam ran in front of him, and there was nothing there. He looked around, still scared of whatever could be in there, but after searching all over and finding nothing he concluded it had been a coincidence. He started looking around again, now actually paying attention to the details in the room. It was empty, except for a dark figure he noticed in the most distant corner. His first thought was that he hadn't seen that the first time, but he wasn't scared now. He walked a little closer, but for some reason it didn't become any clearer, as if it was blurred out. It was rather small, about the size of a child cowering against the wall. He knelt down to touch it, when it suddenly shook, as if it had shuddered or woken up suddenly. Jake felt that thing was staring at him now, and felt fear again. He got up and took several steps back, still feeling an invisible piercing gaze straight to his face. He turned around to get out, but the stairs were gone. He was trapped in the room. Panic started twisting his thoughts. He wanted to run away, but there wasn't anywhere to go. The shape rose slowly. It was tall and thin, and still blurry. Jake tried to scream, but he realized no sound came out of his mouth. The shadowy figure bent forward to his height, and in an instant lunged to Jake's throat before he could blink an eye.
Jake jumped and yelled and almost fell from his bed. He covered his face instinctively and put out the other arm. Then he realized he was safe, and sighed deeper than he had ever done before. He felt his rushing pulse and the leftover of the tingly feeling of the adrenaline rush. His mother's head peeked from the door.
-Everything ok, sweetie?-
-Errr....yeah Mom, thanks. I just had a....very nasty nightmare.-
-Awww, poor baby,- she said as she sat down on the bed and started stroking his hair and face softly. He smiled and covered her hand with his.
-Come on, breakfast is ready.-
Jake got up and went downstairs to the kitchen table, where she had served him chocolate and bacon and eggs. Just the smell made his mouth water. He sat down and munched down viciously.
-Whoa whoa calm down, monster. Don't choke down on your food,- she said smiling.
-Doghnt woghhrry maaAAAGGGHH- he said as he choked down on his food.
-Told you.- she laughed as she took a sip from her chocolate.
Jake drank from his cup and gasped for breath a few times. Then he finished his breakfast and went back upstairs to shower. In the meantime, he remembered his dream. Yesterday he couldn't wait to go back down, but now he was hesitant. It was just a dream, wasn't it? It meant nothing in the end, but those last minutes were still sharp in his memory. He got dressed and went down again. His mother was doing the dishes.
-Sooo...what do you want to do today, honey?- she asked.
-I...don't know, Mom,- he said, throwing a quick glance at the rug covering the door.
-I thought you wanted to look around the basement.-
-Oh, yeah...- he hesitated again. He had to make up his mind now.
-Meh. Screw it. It was nothing more than a dream.-
-Sure. I'll go check it out.-
He grabbed a flashlight from his nightstand and went down where his mother had already opened the door for him and was peeking inside.
He knelt down beside her and peeked too. It was as pitch dark as usual, but now the smell wasn't so strong. Perhaps they were getting used to it. He sighed one more time, got up, and turned around to go down the wooden steps.

You've definitely caught my attention with this story x]
If you don't mind me asking, is this a horror with monsters, or is it about Jake and his life...? If you aren't too keen on spoiling it, that's fine ^^

Ah I see. Well...no. This one will be quite a cliche story with typical stuff. If I write another one I'll make it more original.
