Description
This was inspired by a poster from 1917 by M. Kalmanson. The poster was for Bezdna ("Abyss"). As I understand it, it was a silent film, since lost. The short story was written in 1902, but the poster was created in 1917 by a russian artist. I found it very inspiring, and did my own take on it.
MODEL: Meghan Perkins
PLATFORM: PC and Mac
TOOLS: Two Wacom tablets (Intuos 3 and Cintiq 21UX)
PROGRAM: Adobe Illustrator
EFFECTS: I don't use any 'effects'. In Illustrator I use simple strokes and Brush strokes, gradients and gradient meshes, and many many objects with varying transparency settings. Photoshop was used for final overlay of antiqued texture.

this reminds me of when i take a bath. i get my whole body in the water and leave one boob out and imagine it's an island where tiny people live. then i move my boob in the water leaving only the nipple out and imagine all the citizens running uphill from the flood. then i slowly take both my boobs out of the water-exposing a second island- and imagine all the people expanding their villages

A fantastic illo, Echo! The color palette is tremendous altogether, and the aging overlay adds nicely. That this is constructed from vectors (dramatic pause) makes my heart flutter! This shines with so much "hand drawn" appeal that it knocks me out. The model/pose that you chose makes this a very eye-grabbing work. Beautiful, mysterious, and tragic. Fave'd.

Thank you so much. I get the 'hand-drawn' look primarily from two techniques. First, I do a hand drawing and then scan and bring it into Illustrator. Once in illustrator, I don't draw normally. When I want to draw a stroke, I don't simply use a stroked line or a brush - I actually draw the entire line as an object on my tablet. Yes, that means when I want a horizontal line, I will draw both the top and the bottom of that "line" (and the ends) and fill it with color. That gives every stroke an organic touch.

Thank you for the insight into your awesome technique, E! Props to you, for drawing even the lines (I cheat, a bit, and sometimes do stroked lines, but then commit them to vectors when satisfied.). I've been a vector Fanboy since AI 88 and 3.0, with minor dabbling in Freehand along the way (due to an employer's preference). Lovely work, my friend, and please have a great weekend!
