My first attempt at a complex shaped cake, here's the Catbus from "Tonari no Totoro!" I did this one on my own time over spring break, though I did show it to my teacher. (I don't believe she recognized it, tho. ) It's yellow cake with homemade chocolate buttercream icing (okay, but not the best).

A few years ago I took a trip to San Francisco and bought a Catbus plushie at the Japan Center mall. When I started cake decorating I thought it would be cool to duplicate it in cake. Here's the results of my first attempt. Not too bad, and I learned a few useful things through trial and error (like thinning the icing when applying to raw cake edges). The overall look is okay... except for... that face. O_o;; Mom thought it looked cute, but I think it could give kids nightmares. I'm not sure what went wrong with it. I think fixing the shape of the head might help a bit. Well, I still have the design notes so I'll probably try it again someday and see if I can improve it.
