Description
Here's the final sheet.I'm probably going to make one with a color swatch so that I can use it for art reference, but honestly, I just colorpick directly from it....
I know they're not really an... original species but yeah. Have Deneb. :3
LORE/ABOUT
They are hermaphrodites with a range of masculinity and femininity:
Pen, Satellite, and Alpha.
Deneb exhibits a middle bodytype, "Satellite," which are equally adept at impregnating as getting pregnant. The most feminine bodytype, "Pens," are the smallest, most flamboyant, have many more feathers on their bodies, and are the best for bearing children. The largest and mostΒ masculine Avians are called "Alphas" and do not have feathers on their arms, and have a harder time bearing children because they have higher testosterone levels.
It is possible for a Satellite to become an Alpha, or a Pen if circumstances require, and an Alpha to become a Satellite in order to survive. However, it is impossible for a Pen to become an Alpha, even if they become a Satellite for self preservation, as it is impossible for an Alpha to become a Pen. The changes are due to hormone reactions to external stimuli in order to continue to survive. Because of this, Avians rapidly adapt to situations and survive almost everywhere.
Wild Avians operate in a hierarchical flock, with usually one, large, masculine Alpha, a few Satellite Avians, and a handful of Pens that the Alpha breeds with, and the Satellites sneak sex with. It is not unheard of for a Satellite to bear children for an Alpha, but their role is most often to hunt while the Pens are caring for fledgelings. They control huge territories that span miles of nearly every terrain.
They speak a language that is a complex series of chirps, whistles, coos and trills, and can copy most bird calls. This is because they have two voice boxes in the branch of the trachea, which also means they can speak and sing in two separate tones. Aside from speech, they communicate with scents, pheromones, and body language.
Their hearts and lungs are much larger than a human's. They also have semi-clear nictitating membranes that protect and wet the eye during flight and battle. Civilized Avians can grow to be taller and overall, larger than their wild counterparts. Heights are as follows:
Pen: 5' 8'' - 6' 4'' (Civil) or 3' 4'' - 4' 5'' (Wild)
Satellite: 6' 5'' - 7' 3'' (Civil) or 5' 4'' - 6' 2'' (Wild)
Alpha: 7' 7'' - 9' 6'' (Civil) or 6' 10'' - 7' 3'' (Wild)
Their colorations and markings are sometimes similar to existing birds, but every single one of them represents a star.
Avians are more or less immortal, growing old, dying and reincarnating until their star dies. As long as they can see the light of their star, they will reincarnate. This does not make them impervious to disease, famine, injury, nor does it give them any magical powers.
