an idea i had of fusing Nintendo's Kirby with Minecraft's Ghast enemy probably a decade ago. please don't ask.

deep below Popstar lies one of the afterlife realms called the Underworld. this realm, housing demons and monsters, is where bad souls go to be tortured eternally for their sins. it is ruled by a skeletal drake dragon named Skellar. however, mere mortals cannot live in this realm due to a deadly toxic air that can penetrate through even the most advanced air-filtering devices like gas masks. because of this, Skellar has enchanted the portal so that if a mortal enters a portal to the underworld, their spirit is split from their body and becomes a unique astral body known as a Wraith.
unlike normal astral projection, their bodies are still alive, but react to everything with apathy. but thankfully, a Wraith is perfectly immune to the Underworld's toxic air. and because they are in the same category as astral bodies and ghosts, they have the standard abilities like passing through walls, levitation, and not being seen or heard by mortals. when a Wraith wants to return to the surface and into their bodies, their bodies are ripe for the Wraith to re-enter their body. however, there is a 5 out of 50 chance that a soul retains somewhat of their corporeal forms.
