Idk what Pixar intended to show in that situation xD i got to hear couple interesting assumptions from my friends like 'Alex knew but pretended' and like 'Mater's voice was also changed in fact but in a cartoon they had to keep Mater's voice on to not confuse kids'. Both opinions can be truth who knows but i personally found that dumb how noone noticed difference (if we just leave it as blunt as it was shown in Cars 2). So yeah xD Alex can't be that dumb!
