She was a lady first. American Nintendo censors didn't want ladies getting beat up in a video games so Capcom says: Well, its NOT a lady, Poison is a transvestite/transexual. Plus looking like a hooker( high heels and handcuffs) didn't help either. I'm not sure how that is better or worse. They ended up changing the character completely in the US version of Final Fight. So her gender has gone back and forth... Either way still hot
