As bizarre as it sounds, this is based on a real-life being which does live in swamps (or any warm fresh water) and DOES CONSUME BRAINS when accidentally inhaled underwater, a protozoan named Naegleria fowleri. The disease it causes, naegleriasis, is almost always fatal.
