I had such preconceived notions of a "buzzard" as being more vulture like. I think it was just last year that I found out that they were more hawk-like. I'm an old lady and still learning new things about some of my favorite animals out there! LOL
Stunning shot! I should have said that first.

Yea, I have to explain it to people all the time. Some people are able to understand it, but many just blow off my explanations.Β
Thank you!

This is an awesome photo! <3 The tense, the strength behind her wings, the.... something I can't describe because I'm lacking english skills...
Really, amazing shot.
And I think it would have been even nicer if she would have been a little more in the top left corner. It would have made the feeling of looking up to her strong wings even better. (if you know what i mean)...

amazing shot hun Β your work is truly amazing Β
i know this is a buzzard
but DAMN that looks so much like a hawk just looking at the head and face
this bird could easily be mistaken for a hawk

Thank you so much!
Buzzard is the proper term for what a lot of people call a hawk. Buzzards are birds in the genus Buteo (which includes Red tail-hawks, Red-shouldered hawks, and many others). Many people associate the word buzzard with vultures.

you're welcome hun
so hawks are considered a buzzard ??

Certain ones, yes. Like I said before, a lot of people think buzzard is another name for a vulture, but that is not correct.Β

okay technically doesn't buzzard mean scavenger ???
seeking dead things only ??

EdgedFeather In reply to sharkbaits [2015-05-22 03:10:11 +0000 UTC]
No. That's part of people getting buzzard confused with vulture. Buzzards are hunting birds. Vultures are the birds that eat carrion. Here in north america, we refer to most birds that should be called buzzards as hawks, like the Red Tailed Hawk and Red Shouldered Hawk. They are both in the genus buteo, so they are technically buzzards.

ahh okay Β so what about eagles and broad wing hawks would they be considered buzzards as well

EdgedFeather In reply to sharkbaits [2015-05-23 02:04:09 +0000 UTC]
Eagles are just eagles. Broad-winged Hawks are in the genus Buteo, so yes, they are buzzards.

okay
now Β what about falcons ?? they are hunting birds Β would the Merlin i took a photo of be a buzzard
or would they be in a different class of hunting birds ???
π: 0 β©: 1
EdgedFeather In reply to sharkbaits [2015-05-24 01:41:41 +0000 UTC]
No, falcons are falcons. I did not mean that all hunting birds are buzzards. I said that to help clarify the difference between a vulture and a buzzard. Vultures do not hunt for their food. Buzzards do, like hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, etc. The only birds that are classified as buzzards are birds in the genus Buteo.Β
