He is beautiful! :3 We have many native Red tails where I live, as well as Coopers, Kestrels, some Ospreys but whenever I see them they are flying high over head. This shot really captures the beauty of these amazing Birds.

Thanks, I really love this little guy.
Even though I work with these birds everyday, I still LOVE seeing wild ones!

He is not a pet, he is my hunting partner. He is still a wild animal, and not a social creature at all. But yes, it is amazing to work with birds of prey

Very true! I have always admired these majestic predators, the very symbol of the wilderness, in my opinion. Just two small questions-how long did it take to get a license? And how does one obtain a raptor?

You have to find someone who is already a falconer in your state who would be willing to take you on as an apprentice. You have to take a test, build a facility to house your bird, and gather equipment, then get the facility and equipment inspected. After you do all that, you can get your license. Your first bird has to be taken from the wild.

I was expecting it to be a bit harder; however, it still seems challenging enough to ensure only the best become partners for these awesome creatures. Given enough time, I would love to try to get a license and care for a Cooper's or Red-tailed hawk, as I love the amazing predators (they are both quite common where I live)

The most important thing with falconry is to remember it's a hunting sport. To get one of these birds, you have to take the bird out hunting as often as you are able to. The hardest part is finding someone who will be your sponsor. It's a huge commitment to become a falconer, and many potential sponsors will make sure you prove that you are up for the commitment. In most states, your first bird has to be either a Red-tailed Hawk, or an American Kestrel.
If you are really interested in the sport, most states have a falconry club. If you google your state and "falconry club" you will probably find that your state has one too. Contact someone from there and they should be able to help point you in the right direction

Thank you so much for all the information! I'll be sure to remember all of this. Hawks are common where I live, and since I love animals, it'd be pretty hard not to build up a special interest in birds of prey. (I just saw a Red-Shouldered hawk when I went outside to fill up the birdfeeder!)
