Nice design... but that is the most repetative and bland music I've ever heard in my life. I only wish it lived up to the design. I understand thats the style of music, but I find it very hard to respect something like it. I know what it requires to produce it, but for the opposite reasons that my midi scores make for poor recordings, this makes for a poor recording.

The cover is so vibrant and nuanced, but the music is little more than a display of software competence and tonal/textural blends. It lacks all the aspects of what makes good music.

What is it about this music that you like? I mean that repectfully, what about this makes it good, better than an amature, and what about it defines it as what it is? What is the draw to this from a listener standpoint?

It sounds to me like the aspects of musicality that are independant of score. But it lacks the score... it is very much the opposite of my own music, which is all about the notes and the tonal moods, rather than the tonality and textural quality that physical musicians or sound engeneers can bring.... While this seems to be a demo reel for the sound engeneer to find a composer to match skills with to produce a musical whole. In other words.... this music feels unfinished, or even unstarted.

Hi, looking at your fave type of music/band, I dont think you will understand it (idont mean that disrespectully either, just different preference for sound) , but psy trance is all about repetition and tonality - monotonous repetition of notes and structure. It's called progressive, which is misleading because each track doesnt progress very much musically but instead progresses texturally and tonally. the progressive part also comes about from mixing one track into another and leading the listener on a journey through atmospheres. It's primarily druq music - ie best enjoyed while on druqs as the repetative nature is conducive to hypnogogic states and feet shuffling (sometimes called dancing). The lack of differing notes is what gives it it's appeal, note changes and key changes distract the listener from their journey.
You either like it or you dont. hehe - interesting discussion

your definition of whats needed is greatly misconstrued. What is needed is a good ear for music and an inate talent to produce something fresh. When YOU listen to this music it all sounds the same to you because you are not familiar with it's intricacies and nuances. just like all speed metal sounds the same to me. A musical talent is what separates the oversaturation from the truly breathtaking. Also what is needed is a fairly decent studio setup if you want to create quality music. High end PC $1500+ AUD, professional soundcard $300+, Studio Monitors $1500+, and a synth Access Virus / Nord Lead etc $3000+
The people making this music on their $70 rigs with onboard soundcards are the ones oversaturating the industry and creating narcolepsy-inducing abominations. All the people i know who produce (most of my friends) have strong backgrounds in music production/writing.
It does have roots (or at the least draws influence from) world music Raga, Balinese Tibetan Tribal etc. and i hear it all the time. The great thing about this music is its selflessness, there is no *rockstar* up on stage, the music is the celebrity. there is a freedom in the anonymity (dont confuse psytrance with normal trance or techno like Digweed, Sasha etc - they are their own rockstars [read "cockheads"] )
There are no real rules to this genre, it has to be constantly innovative, improving and advancing over what came before: the average track lifespan (how long it's played at events/dances etc) is about 12 months. After that it's seen as quite dated and old. Harsh, but it makes for a very progressive music movement.

I think it is more about the fact that I don't do drugs, I think, I get the point. I just don't feel what everyone seems to feel. I do listen to droning music, Indian, Balinese Gamelan. But this seems to deny what I've read on wiki to be its roots. Old type drums or tribal trance inducing music. Which this doesn't even seem to be derivative of. What are the guidelines that define the good examples from the poor ones. Electronic, particularly dance styles have become so oversaturated due to the ease by which it can be created.

a decent PC. 70$ and various nuts and bolts to record hit sounds are all you need to produce this kind of music, and the nature of it means that anyone with a mild sense of rythm and tone can produce pro quality recordings. Where does the talent come in....

In other words, what separates a craftsman, who follows rules to produce a product, from the artist.... Or is it an artless form of music. Like a wedding band is best when it is artless and purely craft?

Was this intended to look so much like Amon Tobin's album covers, with that 3D design? I mean, considering the fact that one of his albums is titled "Permutation"? And considering that Ninja Tune Records is all about the Zen Cuts? And that the logo on the front cover is basically the logo for Splinter Cell, for which Amon Tobin just wrote the soundtrack? You're clearly a great designer, but this cover is really bordering on plagarism, in my eyes. I mean unless you're secretly Kevin Foakes, of course. If you did get inspiration from his cover designs, you really should give him credit in your description, to avoid confusion.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

edit-dsn In reply to pley [2005-09-05 00:17:42 +0000 UTC]

You may or may not believe this but: I never played the SplinterCell games (i prefer FPS shooters) and never followed them so i had no idea Amon did the soundtrack.
I also never really listened to Amon's music (other than early Cujo: adventures in foam), and hence never had his cd's and hence never studied any cover art. I was aware of the ZENCD monika and also the Permutations name, but as i said before in this thread I DIDNT NAME THE ALBUM OR THE RECORD LABEL, I JUST DID THE DESIGN.
As for the splinter cell logo - if you're going to henestly say that three dots are copyright then you should also have said i ripped off the Predator targeting laser (as seen in predator 1, 2 and AvP, also the computer games) of which i was a huge fan in my formative years (and thus would have been a much larger influence than SplinterCell). Also there is the Audi logo which looks suspiciously like my logo if you just resize all the circles and overlap them, in fact that's a hell of a lot like the Olympic logo! and the Toyota logo - all made up of arranged circles.... u get the point? I appologise for not knowing the intricate details of Kevin Foakes' life works and for not playing SplinterCell like you. this piece came from inside me - and inside me was influenced by what's around me, by what i see. if i was influenced by these things you say it was subconciously, not intentional. But i can honestly say i have no idea what any AmonTobin album cover looks like.

i was gonna say the exact same thing

funny enough this zenon label releases are titled exactly like the zencd's
Your album --> [zencd002]
Amon Tobins Permutation = [ZENCD36]
Splinter Cell release (also from Amon Tobin)= [zencd100]

its a job well done...but like pley mentioned ...you should atleast be giving the proper credit in your description
