Description I thought it had been too long since I had posted something, which I apologize for. I had been distracted by my upcoming gallery for Fish Quarry, which will be shown at a nearby Cafe here in Lutz Florida.

I really enjoyed making this, as I've always found Double Dee's admiration of insects adorable. Such as the beginning of the episode "Dim Lit Ed" where Edd sets free to a ladybug, but more specifically the episode "Three Squares and an Ed" where it was shown that Edd keeps a pet spider in his basement, who he affectionately named, Mildred.

After I finish my current fan comic, Sting Like an Ed, I want to start another fan comic that would further explore Edd's relationship with bugs, nature and more specifically, Mildred, since it was barely touched on in the cartoon series itself. Although, I suspect Mildred wasn't actually his pet, more-so another insect he was taking care of, to later release, but since no information on this was given, this allows allot of wiggle room for me, to which I look forward to exploiting.

Though, I don't think he would've named Mildred if he intended to release her from the start... hmmm... perhaps he did want to release her at first, then got emotionally attached. I'll have to remember to include something about that as well.

I think Edd not only loves bugs, but all of nature, as I can imagine he would take comfort in a higher power, such as mother nature, and would admire the perfect design of the so-called circle of life. But I would speculate he takes care of bugs out of sympathy for living beings smaller then himself.

I also imagine that he was more open to frolicking in the woods as a young boy, but when he grew older, he learned to admire nature from afar, though he continued to help bugs he felt can't help themselves, or something like that...

Anyhow, this is all stuff I would like to explore, as it was never really discussed in the show, and I think it's a chance to really get into the character's head.

But enough of my rambling, I hope you enjoy my little fan art, and I hope to post more soon. Tell me what you think of my ideas and share your own ideas with me if you wish.

EDIT: By the way, the hair concept is not mine, it's hers ->

Also, I just realized something... Mildred, think about it... Mildr-ED.... okay, that's a stretch, but still.

And one more thing, this was done in pencil, but was cleaned up in Photoshop, that still makes it traditional, right? Or does that make it digital? (I cleaned up pencil smudges, stencils, specks, ext.)

Aw, thanks hun! -hugs-

I've been drawing allot of drawing fan art recently due to my lack of options on RSC :/ Hell, I still need to rebuild the website, now that the url isn't obtainable... (web url provider screwed me a bad deal)

But I'm confident that it will work out for the best... I actually would like to rebuild it with Pennhurst as a more prominant feature, as I still plan to work more on Pennstarhurst, I actually been having some ideas I wanna run by you, that reminds me, I need to ink the scans I showed you...

In the meantime... ISN'T EDD CUTE?! <3

Aw, thank you!

I'm really eager to start playing with this idea. I'm working on a script, which I plan to actually post before starting on the comic. I think I may finish the 'Sting Like An Ed' comic later, as I dont wanna stop my productivity just cuz im stuck on an ending, I'd rather let the ending come naturally rather then forcefully.

I giggle-aaawed at these pictures completely! Plus, I love the observations about Double Dee (including what you said in your other posts). They are most definitely thought provoking, so thanks for sharing them. I always thought Double Dee would love being an outdoorsy type when he got older.

Story time! I love bugs. I had a pet tarantula but my ferret killed her by accident. ): I miss Lunchbox....

I'm quiet charmed you took the time to look into my ideas so thoroughly. I really do strive to go for thought provoking stories. Edd's so complicated and can be examined from so many dimensions, I'm surprised my topics have had so little exploration.

His love of bugs and nature show that he's not a garden variety super genius. He thinks, he's self-aware, he feels, in fact, he's quiet the romantic. Not to mention he thrives on drama, in a Shakespearean sense.

Aww :< poor spider... Sorry for your loss...
I find it interesting, however, how many relate to such an idea >.> this tells me I must be on the right track
Lunchbox? That's a new one...

Anyhow, to sum up, thank you! ^^

He is really complicated if one were to look into his character more deeply. That is definitely a draw to him.

I have noticed he is dramatic, lol. Plus in the episode where they pick occupations, he says he fancies himself to be traveling or something. So that plus his love of plants and bugs could lead him somewhere interesting.

Thanks. Yeah, you are! I think most people have pets in their life, I guess most people don't have spider pets but still, it's relatable.

Yeah, you're more than welcome! I hope you update again.

I just re-watched that episode so I could know the exact quote you referred too...

Aw, how cute! He wants to go exploring to find himself when he grows up.
That fits him so amazingly well, thanks for pointing that out! That will fit snuggily with my ideas.
In fact, it sort of reaffirms some of my theories and concepts.

He's so well rounded and humanly flawed, struggling to maintain perfection in a world of chaos, even in school where he has the moral high ground. I love that almost nothing about Edd is completely straight forward. He has allot of mixed feelings and his actions hold allot of subtext...

I sometimes saw cases like the spelling bee as a cry for attention from his parents. He would normally have little interest in competitive events. It's like there's more to him then a simply love for academics. It's even possibly he's struggling to learn every little thing he can to better his chances of survival in the real world, as despite his selfless ways, he still has a sense of self-preservation.

He wishes for a life of adventure and intrigue, but is restrained by his own limitations as a weak, sheltered, latchkey kid, getting a sense of adventure from his antics with Ed 'n Eddy, while their actions often conflict with his ideals.

He absorbs so much about the world he loves to learn from, fascinated by even the smallest miracles of life, like he wishes his fears didn't restrain him from being closer to nature.

He also gives me the impression of a hopeless romantic, having gotten his head wrapped around some forgotten sense of morality, like something he read in an old series of bad adventure books, with flowery monologues and a cliche imagining of the romantic lifestyle of an explorer. And yet, his wish to escape into a world of adventure could just as easily be just that, his own means of wanting to escape, secretly wishing to run away from himself and his stressful lifestyle, to be something he's not.

And even his proud sense of morality could have hidden motives in his desperate wishing to make his parents proud of him.

Even his simplest motives could be broken down and examined, which is one of the many interpretable elements of the show that makes it equivalent to fanart crack.

Anyhow, I've really been enjoying our back and forth comments I'm flattered you've taken such an interest in my work. Sorry this one ran so long X_X I kinda went on a roll there.

I love how well thought out that is. I agree with everything you said! But lets see what I can add....

I think that Edd would be a bit more interesting if he grew up, because I often look at characters as how they will change in reaction to how they are in the present. We've seen that all of the characters have changed during the 6 seasons and movie and in 11 years, but they are still just kids. For example, Edd is actually has a bit of sarcasm to him in the beginning (like when they build the tower to race down it on a bike in order to get a world record, Eddy says that everyone would be able to see them, to which Edd replies "Well DUH, Eddy, [it] only takes up half of the cul-de-sac!" But as the shows go on, his sarcasm becomes more refined, so I think does his intelligence and his caring about others, and about nature too.

That's an interesting point that you made that he WANTS to go exploring but is being held back by his own fears. I'm assuming you mean fears of getting dirty (puddles are messy messy messy!) or germs or disorderliness, in which case I think that as the genius he is that he will find a way around that somehow if his love for life is strong enough. He is most definitely an improviser. For instance, when he hugs Ed on Ed's bed, Double Dee puts down a towel because he doesn't want to touch the bed but he wants to comfort his friend).

I don't recall him talking about his parents in the spelling bee episode, but Nano was there so it is assumed to be a semipublic event, so yes, his parents SHOULD have been there but they probably weren't. As far as making his parents happy, I actually don't think he speaks of them or does more for them than say, Ed's mom (since Sarah's always telling on him and he's always doing chores for her), or even Eddy's family (each in turn), it's just that they react to it differently. Edd may be the straight guy (or try to be, anyway) because he's released from parental guidance so he has to grow himself up. I was also like this, I was a very good kid and often held other people back from being mean or trying to be helpful because it was the right thing to do because in my eyes that's how adults were supposed to be, albeit alone I was. (My sister in the other hand was constantly coddled so she rebelled and was such a disaster, which is sort of what I see in Eddy since he is the younger sibling.) So in conclusion, I don't personally think that he is trying to conscientiously impress his parents because he knows that they aren't there, OR that that's the conclusion he will be coming to just over the horizon of puberty.

Ha, that was a lot. Sorry. But I love talking about characters so feel free!

very nicely done on this one! the pants are a bit rounded but it seems okay. may need to shorten him a little.
other than that it's PERFECT!

Awww, that's so heartbreaking ;_; -hugs-

While we're sharing, when I was a child, I hurt a bug on accident (or instinctively) and struck with grief, I tried to nurse it back to health, but failed. Hence I wanted to take on this storyline, as I feel like I can really get into Double Dee's head on this one.

Hehe, I agree, I'm still getting my EEnE legs, so to speak. This is why I wanted to take on little projects, to slowly work my way up to more complex fan comics. My ultimate goal is to make a fan comic surrounding Edd's under-the-hat-theory. kik0thek1ller says I'm progressing fast though, so that's good it took her 4 years to get to the point she's at, and she's awesome <3

Aw, thank you ^^ I'm glad you like it!

I love the idea because it's so sad while at the same time being so happy. His parent never being around, his only two friends showing him such little support, he gets his much needed affection from an arachnid incapable of feeling human emotion.

...which incidentally makes it even more adorable.

Edoholic In reply to Nintendo-Nut1 [2010-01-03 06:36:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! ^^

I do plan to seriously dissect Double Dee's personality in my own way, and I think this would be the best way to go about it, as it would let me explore the parts of his life that interest me the most. For instance, he's such a logical being, yet he's constantly using phrases like "Good Lord Man!" or "Oh My Lord!" sort of implying he has room in his logical psyche for the mythical and spiritual. Not like religion, but it's like he accepts the fact there are things beyond his understanding... or something like that

I think he subconsciously feels a spiritual connection with nature, but his obsessive compulsive ways prevent him from acting on his feelings, so he takes care of wounded insects, which again, I find too adorable for words.

Plus, I can kind of relate to that. When I was a child, I hurt a bug on accident (or instinctively) and struck with grief, I tried to nurse it back to health, but failed. So, this experience allows me to get involved with such a plot on a personal level.

Awwww.. that reminds me of a clip I saw on AFV...lemme see if I can find it...
Shoot, no luck. But in it, the family finds a spider in the bathroom, but the little girls don't wanna kill it, so they end up releasing it into the backyard, and they're all like "bye, spider!" It was the cutest thing ever.
