Description
Driven by the crazy visuals and gameplay the series has established, I decided to spend whatever time I had outside of work to indulge myself in this Gears piece. Lost a couple of nights of sleep but hey when push comes to shove any gearhead knows ya just gotta go all out.DISCLAIMER: Assets generated for use in the composition of this image were taken from the GOW3 Asset Pack provided for this challenge including the Savage Locust, Brumak, and Berserker all of which are property of Epic Games. All credits and thanks to the visual art team that created the original pieces for all of us to work with.

Anyone else able to download this piece? I'm not seeing the option to do so and this is the only piece in the contest that I haven't been able to save.
It's a gorgeous work of art and I'd really like to get my hands on the full res version!

not trying to sounds rude before..but this is proly the best piece in the contest. i predicted the second i heard about the contest that the winner would be someone who works in the industry..in video game concept art and who does not work for epic and will be grabbed up by other companies instead of epic (their competitors). somehow they would award first prize in this contest to the "guy who got away". i just find it ironic that you fit into that profile so far from what i have read on your page.
i only say this...because i don't like epic games and i don't particularly like their politics (which i suppose they think is something privately done in their industry and largely unknown to a public that is manipulated by the machinations of their "media image"...but i think business men forget how not smart or clever they actually are and that poorly managed marketing strategies are not as "epic" as they have conceived them bit by bit. little picture people i'm afraid looking through an infinitely inward turning kaleidoscope believing strongly that it is a periscope into the future.
warren buffett recently commented on how successful business men have to actually be little picture people and deal with the 'here and now'...eventually through precarious attrition, some will ascend to becoming ultimately successful. that is great...and epic games are a very successful game developer, but, i can't help but feel they have planned something nefarious with their contest.
why give 100 spots and an obscene first place prize if that for creating an idea that they will try to satisfy everyone in an all too rigged contest. that isn't to say the winner will not be the best piece...but that they have motivated certain actions behind the scenes so that the winner is somewhat predetermined.
paranoid conspiracy theory? perhaps. or spot on maybe.
i wish you luck in securing 1st place...it seems you are very close.

This comment is extremely rude and misdirected. You might as well be complaining that the contest is rigged because only a "good" entry will win. Professionals tend to be "good" because of how hard they work at their art. obviously spent many hours working on this piece and has as much right as anyone who meets the guidelines to enter. Often the people working in the industry are the ones who need opportunities like this the absolute most, to build their career and make a living.

i have reasons to distrust epic games. i believe that they will choose a winner based on industry politics more than artistic merit, ultimately. it is an opinion of mine based on extensive experience dealing with the company on the level of PR and how they manage their relations with their fans.

I have to agree with you on this one, Massifesto.
This competition should be about giving those artists a chance to win money. It's like as if to say, if I were a professional artist, I will enter every contest I can just to win money and take away that privilege from everyone else who should deserve it. Besides, with such high quality art from this edward person, shouldn't he have a job? Or the conspiracy itself may be the fact that the creators of the contest have a man on the inside to make art where no outside individual can win 10,000 dollars, included with the 200 dollar prizes for the 100 semi finalists. But hey, I'm just a 12 year old, but for something like this to come up unconventionally fast....must be a coincidence. Not to mention he's a works for a "non disclosed" company....
For 10,000 he's gotta write down something for where he works at for this w-2 when filing in taxes.

you and this *MASSIFESTO faggot are basically saying that winning is everything. you two keep forgetting that this contest is friendly competition and it's done to express fondness for the game. it's not about winning. i honestly believe this piece is great, so why are you complaining? if you can do better, i welcome you to try. if you can't, then keep working harder to enter and win a contest in the future then lmfao.
how can $200 for 97 runner ups be bad either? most contests don't give anyone shit lmfao.

who goes for a 10k prize? artists who usually charge 1000-2500 for commercial pieces of that detail. artists who are on top of their game. artists who will put in 12-25 hours on the piece.
and then if they don't get the 10k..the get 200 bucks? that is retarded..
the way this contest is set up is to discourage veteran pros from entering...but at the same time they dangle a 10k carrot as if it were a real prize. it isn't.
read my journal.
inevitably they will have told some artists they know to enter. the prize will go to one of them. edward is possibly a guy that fits that bill. possibly not at all. i dont know him.
your sarcasm is misplaced as sarcasm is only valid when someone understands an issue properly...which you do not

I kinda agree with the prize structure. There's hardly any gain from 3 to 2, yet 2 to 1 however seems extremely unwieldy.
On the plus side though, past competition semifinalist prizes were fewer, and of questionable worth. In past contests, if you made the 15 or 25 and you didn't make top 3, the best thing you'd get was a free copy of a pay2play MMO that suffered from a dying playerbase and stagnant development/lack of content.

thank you for agreeing and seeing my point. yes 100 prizes of $200 is very generous and will be great for many artists..like those placing 80-100th (who weren't sure if they would place) or those placing 60-80th (who would charge something like $200 for a piece like that anyway...but there is markedly no middle ground here.
it is similar to the idea of a movie that comes out and has Johnny Depp and then all the other actors, director, cinematographer and everyone else is no one anyone has ever heard of. They are trying to get you to see a movie that potentially sucks and is a waste of time and money, just because johnny depp is in it. that is fucking lame. the film won't necessarily suck...but at every turn, the movie trailer and posters key in on Depp and just sort of forget to add in anything else that fits with the idea of a marquee theatrical feature film release. the company has invested nothing significant in the film except for it's A-list talent and a single credit at that.
as i said...my opinions of epic as a company aside...this contest is a PR marketing bungling from the perspective of sound business models. They needed a middle tier of prize money...place 2-10 should be getting $1000 each.
the way it is now...is either a mistake and limits the kind of talent that will participate..or it is scheistiness of a very lurid kind. i will favor the latter perspective as i have no respect for how epic conducts their relations with the community in the first place.
anyway..thanks for taking the time to comment...and i am sorry to edward for clogging up his art with this discussion.

:iconedwrdjchua: is awfully talented, nobody can deny that. it seems silly that one would think that the contest is "rigged" just because somebody decides to make a new account solely for the purpose of winning. either way, this dude's got mad skills. the rules for the contest are very straightforward, and this guy seems to have hit the nail pretty much everywhere. i don't see why people are getting upset and thinking that he must be some sort of tool for a big bad plan by epic JUST because he's really good.

They'll pick a winner based on the criteria that they set forth, and made clear to all participants. If the wallpaper is going to be licensed by Epic and used to promote the game, it stands to reason that they will be looking for artwork that matches the style and attitude of the game. It's hardly a conspiracy, just common sense.
Whether you're a fan of Epic or how they conduct their business/PR, it's extremely unprofessional to take out your feelings of the company on another artist's work. There's a news article about the contest that would have been much better suited for venting your issues, but this isn't the place for it.

yes...epic games is totally on the level. i think all of us can see that with their dedication to improving the experience of gears 2 from gears 1. and the 10 year olds getting threatened with online violence by 40 year olds and the epic forums encouraging that is also very inspiring. just a really well organized company overall with the good of their community always at the forefront. i have erred i'm afraid in thinking otherwise.
a wonderful company...epic games.
the fact is that Edward is going to continue being a winner in whatever visual art field he chooses. that is obvious. hopefully he wins the money because his piece was best...but something fishy is going on with the contest all the same...and i have 3 personal messages now with people in agreement with me.
so if i'm a troll and an idiot...i guess 3 other "random" people are as well. of course non of us actually are. edward should win right now based on the art itself. but you are right to think i posted here on purpose to grab attention. i did. he should win and some people should be reminded that as much as he is a great artist and this is a great piece...that epic games is a shitty rat bastard company that does not keep their online community standard anywhere in the realm of social acceptability. people can cry bloody 1st amendment all the way home like little pigs but at the end of the day, regular society has a standard of social conduct that SHOULD be imported to the online experience.
epic can rot for all i care...and i think they should double all the prize money after second place down to 100. it is not an appealing payout structure and frankly..it is insulting. they are trying to generate interest in a contest through baiting the community to a prize that is not feasibly available. That is my number one objection about the contest in particular. it is poor marketing and reflects much more poorly on the company itself than my criticisms do of me.
i criticize and they are usually accurate and perceptive critiques of social disorganization and corporate buffoonery. label that whatever you want as the nobody thinkers that you are.
All out FTW..epic fail. and that's it

what spurred me on to comment initially was the self-fulfilling prophecy of my own feverish mind. i suspected that the best piece (high quality and exemplifying a highly marketable theme and image) would come from a "non-regular" or veteran user of this site. that in effect, the winner would have been chosen in many ways behind the scene regardless of the public display. that isn't to say that greg capullo or stanley lau won't join and submit that which gets awarded first. my conjecture is exactly that...and premature. i recognize that. still i found it interesting that the submission that stands out in the contest is also submitted by a non dA user, yet an established veteran of the video game concept art industry.
to be honest...my observations have been insightful...whereas your criticism of my observations have been vapid and irrelevant. my comments are based on experience with the company in question, whereas your comments are an emotional reaction to mine. there is nothing novel coming from my critics on this issue so far.
perhaps we should wait to see who wins and then say "nah nah nah nah nah..massifesto was wrongggg. idiot"

I already told yo I like it, but I am going to give you some constructive criticism this time. The foreground element at the right hand lower corner needs some finishing work. It lacks the texture quality of the rest of the piece. The standard photoshop brush with a blurry edge looks exactly like that--a bit blurred and out place in comparison to the rest of the piece.
