Yup. Cant say I can clearly make out the image. I assume that to be Metal Sonic to the right there but I cant tell if, say, the left one is a more advanced robot of sorts

Ah, the basic idea is that the one on the left is indeed a upgraded replicate of Shadow. The story was to take place in some futuristic AU of Sonic. The Shadow Android (though more of a cyborg honestly) would be one of the (I'd say six) central characters in the story, with an upgraded Metal Sonic as his main enemy.
