Description here is something i threw together for fun. i update her design once every couple of years. i started this character back in ‘06. i’m pretty sure i didn’t know how to draw legs in high school. most of my drawings back then were cut off at the knees.

the latest version is pretty much the 2015 and 2013 designs combined.

I really Like the 2018, but I think the color pallet is really close to D.Va's, I think the color pallet is my favorite on the 2015 and I like how she doesn't have a mask in the 2013 one. Just my opinion though.

2013 has the most badass costume while 2015 has the best anatomy but your 2018 has the most distinct style! I can't decide which one is the best but I think your 2015 is the most distinct one among the rest

let's hope in the next 12 years you get away from needlessly sexualizing your female characters.

edwinhuang In reply to PickleStork [2018-01-27 23:39:41 +0000 UTC]

I'd rather not take that advice. Slut shaming is toxic. Thanks for your opinion

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PickleStork In reply to edwinhuang [2018-01-28 04:10:44 +0000 UTC]

nice try at poisoning the well, but my criticism is not slut shaming. Nothing wrong with pornography. Nothing wrong with sexuality.

Your illustration(s) are not pornographic. They feature characters who presumably have personalities, abilities, educations, preferences, etc. Your hyper-sexualized costumes and poses betray any character traits you imbue onto them.

Unless this character is literally going to a sex party, or is literally a porn star, stripper, or sex worker, and is currently on the job, there is no character-based reason she would dress this way while armed to the teeth with weapons, presumably on her way to some dangerous fight or mission.

The fact that she has weapons suggests she's a trained fighter, or a mercenary, or some kind of soldier. If that's the case, there is NO REASON why she would wear this stuff while so heavily armed. Maybe she'd dress like this to go to a sex party afterwards. That's fine. Maybe she has a new partner every day. that's fine too.

No character, male or female, with an ounce of common sense or intelligence, would wear such ludicrous, bimbo sex clothes to a potentially lethal encounter.

Your need to gratuitously sexualize the character, either out of ignorance, or out of self-indulgence, betrays whatever "fighter/competent soldier" personality you've established. That's where the dissonance between what you say and what you do lies.

Draw your non-pornographic characters according to what they, the CHARACTER, would wear in a particular situation, or draw porn. No shame in either.

I have to respectfully disagree. By your measure, characters like Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and She Hulk are 'needlessly sexualized'. Character development goes well beyond just physical appearance. Story, appearance, and personality is what makes a character nuanced and beautiful. Stifling creativity is dangerous. But that's just my opinion. Have a good day

PickleStork In reply to edwinhuang [2018-01-28 05:02:06 +0000 UTC]

uh yes. yes they are. they were designed by nerdy comic book men in the 1960s and 1970s, in a world orders of magnitude more sexist than it is now. Just try a thought experiment.

Say I tell you to design a character who is a super human woman from a matriarchal society. Super intelligent, saves lives, fights in epic battles. her name is wonder woman.

Now imagine YOU are a woman designing this character in the year 2018, with no prior knowledge of mid 20th century super heroes.

What would this character wear that would best express the traits I just described?

And humor me. How does 2/3 of this woman's breasts hanging out while she has grenades and a sword on her person add "nuance" to her character?

Funny how you consider my feedback "stifling" when this design is "sexy giant tit sword wielding weeaboo sex fantasy with bunny ears #44958688839221.

I don't think what I'm communicating to you represents a failure of imagination. I think it's what I'm looking at.

Your words do not match your actions. You are still using derogatory words and shunning something you're not culturally familiar with. WW and she hulk don't get a 'pass' because of a time gap. I enjoy their current iterations as much as their past.  To each their own I guess. Please be mindful and have a good day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PickleStork In reply to edwinhuang [2018-01-28 05:30:10 +0000 UTC]

Any "derogatory" words are meant to illustrate the narrative of the female gaze art world, of which your piece is a prime example.

The modern Wonder Woman is almost identical to the original, and yes, it is overly sexualized for what wonder woman is. If Wonder Woman were a stripper, she's be dressed appropriately. Nothing wrong with strippers. Nothing wrong with porn.
They take a character who is an intelligent leader, a warrior, and a soldier, and put her in skimpy male gaze hypersexual attire. This does not add "nuance" to the character. It betrays the character.

Again you haven't answered me. This woman of yours has live grenades and a giant sword on her person. What "nuance" does 2/3rds of her tit hanging out add to her character? How do hot pants and torn hose "develop" her character? What am I missing?

Wouldn't a mercenary, even if she was a hypersexual person in her personal life, wear full fatigues, protective goggles, knee and elbow pads? Body armor? If you're going somewhere that requires a sword like that and grenades, what kind of "character" in her right mind would dress that way for that particular venue?

The character is supposed to show the juxtaposition between a playboy bunny and a soldier. A combo that holds a lot of significance to me. But I digress. And please don't continue to mansplain how Wonder Woman is sexist. It is extremely offensive and sexist. I'm done talking to you. Bye.

Just want to say that I'm glad you are standing up for yourself in this regard. I get tired of seeing moral busybodies go around labeling things immature/sexist/misogynistic (what have you) just because it doesn't line up with their current world views while completely ignoring the nuance of the very thing they are criticizing. Art does not have rules. Art is an expression of the person and if they want to make sexy bunny/commando soldiers then by god let them make it and screw anyone trying to convince them otherwise. So for what is worth, here is my proverbial, digital pat on the back. Keep doing you.
