Hi there!

I'd like to start saying that the initial impact of the piece was like, "Ooh, adventurous explorer on horseback-old western days-maybe he's looking for buffalo." Lol.

The technique you used on the background is fantastic. Everything is a little smeary and retains that old-photo crinkled effect, especially in the sky. I would say that those intense purple mountains stand out a bit too much, considering the rest of your color palette is very toned down. Maybe they could have been duller or more red-based?

Speaking of the color palette, I love it. You've got this earth-tone thing goin' on and it's fantastic.

The horse has perfect anatomy, and I'm a stickler for that. Your explorer has the perfect posture to express a "pathfinder." Also, the highlighting on both of them is great, especially on the horse's chest.

I see a few spots, like where the horse's hooves meet the ground, that aren't quite finished-looking, as if I can still see the canvas peeking through. The same goes for the horse's tail, like it's kinda faded. I'm not sure if this was intentional or if it's not visible in real life, but that would be my only complaint.

Of course, I've never painted with oils myself, so I can't speak from experience. Excellent piece! Its overall composition and impact are perfect!

Thank you for your critique.
The  oil paint on the horse tail is still wet as as most of the painting, and when photographed tends to "shine".
Once dried and varnished this evens out.
This must be the first time in twenty odd years that I've actually painted on canvas, usually I use mdf board, and it was more of an experiment than anything else.
I can't get the fine lines and "fill" on canvas that I get on a hard surface, but I'll keep on trying.
Thanks again, hope you enjoy the rest of my work.

Ah, yes. I assumed that the photo wasn't as good as the real thing - it never is!
And wow! You like mdf board a lot then? Just as good as canvas or are there any real differences?

For me. much easier to work on. a hard unyealding surface suitable for multiple techniques, a couple of coats of gesso and off you go.
