This comment could very easily turn into a rant, so I'm going to try and be careful...I think the debate ends with what my mother said to me when I ranted to her: "Abby, Lestat's not real! It doesn't matter whether he's religious or not! That has no effect on you! And you don't have to read the bloody book anyway!"
Too true, mom. Too true.
But it unnerves me none-the-less. Lestat has always always been fickle when it comes to what he believes (other than that he is the coolest thing since sliced bread)... and I think that giving him Redemption will render the rest of his existence sort of... void (but that could well be the point).
I know it's not my place at all to be disapproving, and I'm glad that Anne Rice has found security and happiness in her beliefs, I truly am... But I think it would be better to not write the book at all rather than to change everything Lestat has ever been.
... and I just wanted to draw Harry in his glasses.
p.s. Yes, I am aware what Harry says about creators is hypocritical. I like to call it: a cruel irony (obscure 'Emperor's New Groove' reference! *snort* lol)

I must agree with everything everyone else has said in these comments! She just CAN'T change him! Lestat is meant to be a lovable asshole, and that's how he needs to stay! I've read up to The Vampire Armand (for some reason it made me love Marius a whole lot more, and of course Armand) and he gets over his little bout with comatose-ism, so he can't become a friggin' religilite! If Lestat becomes a saint, then I swear Louis will stop being emo, Armand will become a happy little vampire again, and David will become, for lack of a better word, stupid. It's just THAT impossible.

Dude. Doooode. Don't try to tell me that books don't affect you. Just...NO. N. O. It breaks my widdle heart to hear that. I am who I am today because of the books I've read as much as any people or events that have shaped me. And I even found my husband through our mutual obsession with books. (and children's toys, but that's just the ADD) That, and Lestat being redeemed is just...wrong.

Actually, I heard she changed her mind about writing that book because she wants to focus on her series about Jesus' life. But if Lestat is redeemed, maybe he'll just start robbing blood banks. But that's probably a sin too.
I like your ideas for spoilers.

Tru, tru. Wow, you really have to read Revelation Space. Its oh so sad. All the people I ever related to in that book tended to die (except Aura, but she was hardly human since she was born....)
Just up both of our alley-ways at the moment, hmmm? I know its all sci-fi, but it really does share the same desolation and hope-barren themes as Deathnote and the VC. Coem on, u liked serenity, didnt u?

I agree, even if I don't like Anne Rice. (It's her style of writing not the plot. Love the plot just can't manage to get through a whole book. And it's funny 'cause I REALLY like vampires too... anyway...) It would be pointless to make him see the "error of his ways" because his personality is... well he's an ass and that's the way it should stay. Harry Potter stayed alive (even if every other character was killed off - sorry if you have't read it yet ) and in the same respect for the fans, Lestat should stay an ass.
Oh, and the glasses rock. XD

lol speaking of Harrys.. that's why my Harry has glasses - one of my friends made a crack about how every Harry in the fictional universe from now on should wear glasses So my Harry has them for reading.. and becuz they're pink and they exacerbate his gayness lol.
Anyway, I agree. Anne Rice said in her statement-thing that she was aware Lestat's "goth fans" were probably not going to agree with his change in character.. and I'm thinking.. that's a little generalizing. Anyone who cares about Lestat as a character (especially as an ass lol) is not going to agree with him becoming religious. She should respect the fact that all Lestat fans, regardless of how black they dress, love him becuz he's a self-involved dork at the best of times.
I can definately understand what u mean about her writing style. It can get so over-bearing.. if that's the right way of putting i... but yeah.. I'm in it for the vampires ~ XD

Spoiler alert to anyone who hasn't read it. But he falls in love with Rowan, who seems alot like a marysue/Anne Rice, and Lestat comes to her and offers to take her away/turn her into a vampire. She says she's not ready for that death/that future, and he says he'll wait for her.

Arrgh. I feel the exact same way (though to be honest, I've only read the first book, I've got the other 2 patiently waiting on my shelf). When I read that she'd converted I was kinda like 'huh' about it. I know that she didn't really want to talk to interviewers about the books anymore, which suggests she wasn't too proud of what she'd written, and now I'm afraid she'll just use this book to make up for it.
My guess is that Lestat will end up dead in the new one. At first I thought he might kill himself for the good of all mankind (cheeeeese), but suicide's a sin too, so he'll probably find himself in one of those 'die for a good cause' situations and go for it.
// pre-spoilers!??

I can't believe that never occured to me!! Indeed! You've ruined it lol! (this is almost as frustrating as the time my best friend called me the day before HP7 came out and squealed: "I've figured it out! Snape was in love with Lily!!")
Lestat actually tries to kill himself in 'Tale of the Body Thief' (a spoiler for your spoiler.. dw, it's nothing major ) but he fails.
Hmm.. It's gonna have to be some HEE-UUUGE 'die for a good cause situation' because so far he's proved rather hard to get rid of.
.....I'll cling to that. I don't think I can live in a world where Lestat is martyred for religion. Oooh there we go. Yes. A martyr-ing. That's how it'll happen.

Aye. She's famous for writing gore-and-angst-filled vampire books for the majority of career.. but a few years ago she converted to Christianity, and has since then been writing about.. well.. Christianity.
Recently she's announced that she's considering returning to her old vampire series (called 'The Vampire Chronicles' ) to write one final book.. in which she will make her main character, Lestat (the most famous vampire after Dracula... it's true, and I'm a fan of his, yes indeedy) see the Light.
In other words: she's going to make the biggest bad-ass of a vampire there ever was Christian.
Most of Lestat's fans are at a loss as to how this is going to work.
Hope this elaborates
