Description
We leave pieces of ourselves in the cornersOf bookshelves, stuck between the pages
And in the hand painted wooden bowl
Collecting dust and spare change.
My fingers grazed a fragment
When I saw a photograph of you today
And my lungs caught on the memory
Of the first words you said to me
Lingering like a ghost breath
In the soft curve of my earlobe.
(“Hi, mind if I ask you
Some questions?”)
I hid inside the rain to drown out
The sound. The wet grass stuck to my toes
And the droplets rolled down
Over the shirt that my mom told me
Makes me look like I’ve got a chip on my shoulder.
(She thought her rebel was a princess
But I just think that castles are a lot
To clean.)
So here I am, rain soaked and still
Thinking about how your voice
Feels under my skin.
Now I’m wondering
What makes you think of me?

This made my heart ache, I love it. The way the italicized parts contrast and provide more insight into the poem are wonderful, and the concept here is fantastic. Will definitely check out the poem that inspired this, and may write my own.

Wrote it! Here it is:
The Memory of PlaceMove-out is a wake for a place,
lingering on the light-switch,
closure when the door shuts.
We live through our haunting,
reminiscent,
and when we leave our ghosts are gone.
Unmourned spaces grab, sobbing,
the hems of our shirts.
They tear their memories in grief,
replaying scraps of time,
recollective, inane moments
only walls and thresholds treasure.
His fingerprints turned my windows to stained glass,
She dreamt with her cheek pressed to the table,
my floors are bowed with their footsteps
laden with conversation
and they don't love me enough
to come back.
Maybe ghosts are only dreams
of broken places,
clinging hard to any semblance
of life before abandonment.
