Description Medicine Lake with a female moose in it (near the left shore), supposedly working an overdose of medicine.^^ Please forgive me for framing it without the far right border of the lake. I tried to get as few people in the shot as possible (managed 1) and this place was crowded. There was a moose calf as well but it left the water at some point to feed on some leaves instead. People got way too close to it.... Like, 3 m close.

On the right side you can see burned forest. It got destroyed by a wild fire a few years back. Medicine Lake itself is slowly disappearing. I suppose because the glacier that fed it is too small or simply doesn't exist anymore. If you continue along this lake there are a lot of sand benches and the water is generally very shallow. In a few decades this Lake might be completely gone.

Location: Medicine Lake, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

Danke dir!

Great capture and so happy you got to see Moose Lucky lucky
Here is about Medicine Lake
Medicine Lake is a geologic anomaly in the sense that it is not actually a lake but rather an area in which the Maligne River
(flowing from Maligne Lake  into the Athabasca River ) backs up and suddenly disappears underground. During the summer months
during intensified meltwater runoff  the lake (which during the winter months is a meandering frozen river) fills to levels which fluctuate
over time and with the runoff events. Much like a bathtub that is filled too fast for it to drain, it becomes laden with water (lake) until it can
slowly drain as the tap flow (runoff) is reduced (river). The underground system is extensive and during the 1970s researchers used a biodegradable
dye to determine the underground river's extent. The dye showed up in many of the lakes and rivers in the area to the point where it became clear that
the underground system was one of the most extensive in the world.
Here is what it can look like in Spring season if their is a lot of Snow the previous Winter
I took this one in 2013, but in 2012 the rocks you see at front were all under water including
the last 5 steps of the stairs to the lake, I just don't have that photo on DA anymore

Once upon a green lol! and see the biggest rock, its still there and in your photo too
So in 2012 the water was up to the road, so lets say area was almost flooded and in 2015 the area burned

Oh wow, that looks so completely different! Thanks for all the information. I knew about the underground systems because there were info signs along the Malign Canyon. However, I thought I read a sign at Malign Lake saying that it's disappearing. Maybe I remember or read that wrong.

Yes it almost disappears in summer to Fall
but comes back in Spring
Of course in time if there is less and less snow
for Spring melt it will disappear
