Description Revelation 19:11-16

The Coming of Christ

11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, β€œKING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

This doesn't even come close to doing Him justice, but I enjoyed drawing it!

The concept of the lion and lamb reflected in the sword with the blood on the tip is my favorite part of this.

Hi! I'm a Sunday school teacher in VA. I'm teaching Revelation right now and as I make worksheets for my students (adults), I've been adding pictures (usually classic works of art) that illustrate the passage. I was searching for something for Rev 19 and came across your drawing. I LOVE this picture - as one poster said, Jesus looks very kick-ass! At this point in Revelation, why do people make him look girly or tame?? May I use your picture for my class notes? I always try to caption the pictures I use with the artist and year. If I give Albrecht Durer credit for his 15th century work, I should give Eegor316 credit in 2010 as well - only fair (with your permission of course).

I thought I might try this one with oil paint a while back.....but I just could not figure out how to get that sword in there without making it look ridiculous, so I scrapped the idea for now....not wanting the symbolism to be made a mockery. But this is really well done...."really" well done.

Thanks you. For the longest time the picture in my mind was kind of crazy when I read that passage, and I never considered drawing it. Then I got inspired at some point-maybe by all the superhero movies over the past few years or something-and this image came to mind. I've considered doing it again sometime, hopefully better and in color. You should definitely try the oil painting... this image just isn't the same without color, I think.

What I wanted to do is cover the canvas with revelation passages, then let red and purple paint get all muddy and from the top running down to the bottom (dark colors....not crazy bright ones)....just watery enough so you can still see some of the passages through it, and then paint on top of the background a foreground similar to the one you have....except I think I will have the horse riding out of the canvas. Only problem is....i want to use authentic bible pages for the background....but even though I have collected some lost and found bibles I can't bring myself to start tearing pages out. (the koran is treated with much more respect than we treat our truth books) it doesn't sit right with me.

It's a good idea, you should explore it, even if very slowly. Could you make copies of Bible pages, using some kind of special paper?

Too much work for my taste....hmmm. Maybe if I can find a "pre-destroyed bible." lol

Well, that's a tough one- a lot of people probably have different views on what is acceptable in terms of treatment of a Bible. In a sense, we worship God and revere His Word, but not necessarily the physical leather and paper... otherwise, I imagine we could never even throw a Bible away, no matter how tattered, or write in them as some people do. Some might find your purpose for the pages to be a way of honoring God and spreading His message through your art, but others might disagree and feel offended. I guess it just depends on your motives and how you feel God is leading you.

Kadeshra-Khol In reply to Eegor316 [2010-05-16 16:45:44 +0000 UTC]

I like that answer....you are right. And i do not want to stumble into the pitfall of revearing the actual "paper" and "leather" too much. I dunno....when I read about how the Muslims never allow any book to rest on top of the Koran, or how the underground Asian believers cherish just a page that they have hidden in the a wall....i feel guilty for having the whole thing and tearing it apart. Yet....the art would be very thought provoking and symbolic. You know....when Christ returns we will no longer need the Bible because we will be able to talk to him directly...so perhaps by making Revelation pages the background of my work I am showing that scripture will come to pass and then its usefullness will finally come to its fullest and all matter will be undone. (Probably just a psychological detour to allow me freedom to create the art....but yet...it is true.)

We definitely take it for granted... it seems whenever we have (or think we have) something of importance in abundance--food, water, Bibles--we forget to appreciate it appropriately. The words and pages of the Bible are here to help us, remind us, warn us, and give us knowledge, whether in the form of a whole Bible, or just bits and pieces (the way it used to be disseminated anyway), or perhaps incorporated into art. Let me know if/when you come to a conclusion on this one

Thanks for the feedback and the fave! I agree with you- it seems like the media/entertainment likes to mock His gentleness, but there is more to Him than His role as the Lamb.

of our beloved Lord Jesus portrayed as the King He is.
Gentle Shepherd, yes. Loving Savior and Friend definitely!

But also King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

I absolutely agree - I really appreciate both His gentle and forgiving side (for obvious reasons) and His Warrior-King side, and I think sometimes people forget how powerful He is... how amazing and terrifying (for many) His return will be!
