How the gem works:
The gem saved Mabels special abilities. In that case that means the arms and the wings.
She can only use either the wings or the arms, not both together.
Mabel can use the power of the gem at the longest one hour. After that time she has to wait at least an hour to use the full power, because the gem has to recharge like a battery.
As long as she used it, so long it has to recharge.
If she doesn't observe that rule it possible for the gem to break.

(And I don't want to spoil the fun and type down every information about Mabel. I guess you will know enough about her after the audition.)
