Description Edit: Updated the first ever portrait I had done of Manata to better reflect how I imagine her now, and to have it match better the upcoming Mag'har model.

This is fantastic!Β  I really like this image.Β  You did a great job, and I absolutely love how fierce you made those eyes of hers.Β  The choker is a nice touch, too.Β  It's simple, but very striking, at the same time.Β  It really adds something to the design.Β  Excellent work!

Thank you, I am glad to hear that! I really wanted to give her eyes a bit striking, feral look

Well, you pulled that off, definitely.Β  My thinking for the Orcs in my story setting is that they have a certain feral look to them as well, yet are clearly intelligent.Β  It's like looking into the eyes of a wolf or a tiger -Β yes, there's a bestial quality to their eyes, but you can also tell that they're not stupid and they are not to be taken lightly.Β  The Orcs in my setting aren't as likely to become powerful mages or engineers, but they often prove to be more resourceful than other races give them credit.Β  They're not mindless savages, the way many people in my setting assume them to be.Β  That's one of the reasons I really like your depictions of Orcs.Β  There's real depth to them.

Hey Patrick, I was glad to read through your message. I agree with your point of view, and 100% see what you meant with referring to the eyes of a wolf or a tiger. Majestic beasts. I also agree that they are not mindless savages, yet I also adore the idea that many of them can struggle with the savagery within them (blood haze that can send them into a blind rage, unable to tell between friend and foe). It also appeals to me there are differences between the orc clans in WoW; some are more warmongering than others. Manata here for example is of the Warsong clan, and fighting, battles, glory and proving her worth are very important aspects of her current life - but through the art, and stories that I write, I hope to show that there is more depth to the character than ONLY fighting like a lunatic.

The struggle with savagery is actually an idea that I'm also exploring in my stories.Β  The Orcs in my setting were created by a god (now called Shard because his original name was lost) who intended for them to be strong helpers and protectors, but a god of war and conquest named Malaqor (that name is still in the works) turned them astray and made them into his primary armies.Β  Malaqor went on to do some experiments on the Orcs through a combination of genetic manipulation via eugenics and inbreeding and cultural manipulation.Β  This caused a magical ability the Orcs had been given, which temporarily increased their strength and speed, to become warped, resulting in what is now called a "Blood Rage."Β  (I honestly had not hear of blood haze until recently, so it's interesting how similar ideas can happen from separate sources, eh?)Β  A Blood Rage is a berserker state where the Orc's strength can double or triple, but they can lose their capacity to distinguish friend from foe.Β  Malaqor intended it to be the ultimate trump card, but the Orcs quickly found it to be more of a liability, especially because it caused them to attack their allies if it was too strong.Β  A Blood Rage isn't something that Orcs go into at the drop of a hat.Β  They can learn to trigger it deliberately, but different Orc cultures have different stances on whether that's a good idea or not.Β  Most of the time, a Blood Rage is triggered in a situation of extreme physical or emotional duress.Β  It's a real problem for the Orcs, so many Orc tribes have developed mental training techniques that help an Orc resist the Blood Rage from activating.Β  Some are more successful than others.Β  The biggest drawback to a Blood Rage (aside from potentially killing people you care about) is that, the longer it lasts, the more likely you are to permanently injure yourself or go into cardiac arrest.Β  (Your heart can literally explode if the magic reaches a critical level.)Β

I've been working on a few of the different Orc nations and cultures in my setting to explore both how they view Blood Rages and how they regard warfare.Β  Those that are fanatical in their devotion to Malaqor tend to be the most aggressive and warmongering.Β  Those that only pay him lip service generally focus on being vigilant and ready to fight but won't go out of their way to start conflicts.Β  Finally, those that are still loyal to Shard are typically the most chivalrous and noble.Β  They haven't forgotten that their purpose was to be helpers and protectors, not conquerors and destroyers.Β  Things are coming to a tipping point for the Orcs in my setting, with Shard ascending and Malaqor losing influence because he spread himself too thin, especially with his current obsession with the Dragons.Β  The protagonist of my series is going to play a role in the events which ultimately decide if the Orcs largely abandon Malaqor or not.

I got to take a look at one of the stories you wrote, the one where the Orc woman lost her wolf, and I really like it.Β  It's a great tale about the high cost that recklessness can have.Β  I wish I was as good at telling short stories as you are, because I really struggle to make a concise narrative.Β  Anyway, you've got real talent as a storyteller and an artist, and I look forward to seeing how your talent develops.Β  Also, if you want to get some more insight into the Orcs of my setting, you should take a look at the series of essays I'm writing about them.Β  They're on my profile.Β  I'm currently working on the fourth installment, which is going to be about how Orcs view honor and how that influences many aspects of their cultures.Β  Good luck in your creative endeavors!
