Description
Part four: The curse and the nurseWeeks had passed as Eevee and Charmander trained with their new team. Blakii had assigned Vulpix as their squad leader. Joining them was a nidorina who had been part of an assault team.
Now they were on their first real assignment. As the four walked, Eevee couldn’t help but wonder if he and Charm would ever get home. He knew Latias would be missing him terribly. The thought of her being worried made Eevee feel pretty bad. The only thought that reassured him at all was that he knew Absol would lead some of the rescue missions and keep Latias busy so she didn’t worry too much.
Charmander looked to his friend and knew something was bothering the fox pokémon, so he asked.
“Hey Eevee, you look worried.” Charmander said, “Is something wrong?”
Eevee sighed and replied, “Yeah. I’m worried about things at home.”
Charmander knew from his look what the eevee meant, “You mean Latias?”
Eevee nodded and Charmander sighed, “I’m sure she’s fine Eevee.”
“Sure who’s fine?” Vulpix asked as she looked back to the two.
“Someone Eevee loves back home.” Charmander replied, “He’s worried about her.”
“Don’t worry.” Vulpix said placing a hand on the eevee’s shoulder, “Blakii’ll be sure to see that you two get back if we survive this assault.”
“So, what are we doing anyway?” Charmander asked, “I mean, we didn’t get too much out of the briefing.”
“Like I said before we left,” Vulpix replied, “there’s supposed to be some sort of base here. If there is something here our job is to find out what’s in it, who’s guarding it, and why. If we’re lucky we can get something good out of this.”
“What if we recruit someone?” Charmander asked curiously.
“Well, we could always use more medics.” Vulpix replied, “We have a lot of wounded pokémon still from some of our other attacks. And with the final battle drawing closer we could use some major medical assistance. If there are medical supplies in there grab them and run.”
Eevee now felt more worried than he had been before. What would happen if he had to use the hyper beam? If he went into a seizure because of the amount of energy it took from his body who would save him?
Charmander looked to him and asked, “Still worried?”
“Yeah.” Eevee replied honestly, “But not about what I was before. Now I’m worried about the curse.”
“You know your limit.” Charmander replied, “As long as you don’t pass it, you’ll be fine right?”
Five bursts of pure and powerful golden energy. That’s all the eevee’s body could take. He had only used that much power once and it had almost cost him his life. Luckily, Charmander, Ninetails, and Alakazam’s team had been there to hold him down as his body convulsed after the fifth shot until he fell unconscious.
Eevee looked back to the others. He knew he could depend on Charmander, but Vulpix and Nidorina he wasn’t sure about. If he did go into a seizure, Charmander knew from the experience how to keep his body under control so he didn’t choke himself. At least until Eevee fainted again. But these other two, he wasn’t sure how they would react.
Vulpix stopped suddenly and put an open hand into the air. A sign for the rest to stop as well. Eevee looked up and found the reason they had stopped.
Looming in front of them was a large building made from wood and stone. There was no sign to indicate what the building was for, but Eevee watched as a team of four pokémon walked out of the building and took up positions along the wall. Guards! All four of them in light armor like the armor that Eevee and Charmander were wearing. They were also unarmed.
“Ok, Eevee, you and Charmander take out the left two.” Vulpix said, “Nidorina, you and me will take out the right. Knock them out as quickly as you can and try to be quiet about it. Last thing we want is for the entire guard staff to come down on us now.”
Eevee nodded and lowered himself to the ground. Charmander followed his lead and the two quietly snuck around to the side of the building. Luckily, they had been closer to the left side than the right.
Eevee pulled himself up and flatten against the wall. Charmander did the same, trying not to burn his friend’s tail in the process.
Eevee peeked around the corner and saw one of the guards walking towards him. But they were looking out into the fields in front of the building, not at where they were.
“Ok, here’s the plan Charm.” Eevee said quietly, “When that guard comes close enough, execute plan steel speed trap: maneuver delta.”
Charmander nodded. They had used this one before many times for escort jobs.
As the guard drew closer, Charmander’s claws were outlined in a steel gray color. Eevee glanced around again and then nodded to the charmander once.
Charmander inhaled deeply and let loose a cloud of dark smoke. The dense cloud enveloped the unsuspecting guard who cried out in surprise.
“Now.” Eevee ordered.
Eevee felt light as his attack took hold. Eevee was next to Charmander one second, and gone like a shot the next. The grass where he had been standing was flattened in the direction he’d taken off in.
Eevee struck the guard quickly, letting his fists meet the unarmored stomach of the guard. Charmander bolted around the corner and slashed through the armor with a devastating steel claw attack. As the first guard fell, Eevee’s speed allowed him to quickly attack the second guard without warning. It only took two seconds, but the plan had worked perfectly. Two guards down without too much noise.
“Worked like a charm.” Eevee said, “Good work Charm.”
The lizard pokémon smiled in reply.
Eevee heard the sound of metal hitting the hard earth and turned to see the second pair of guards also down. Nidorina was on top of one of them, growling menacingly as Vulpix quickly knocked them out.
“Nice work.” The vixen pokémon said, “Keep your guard up inside.”
The three nodded and followed her in.
As they walked down a long hallway, Eevee noticed a large doorway that had been left open. He crept up to it and looked in, careful not to let too much of himself be seen.
As he looked in, the eevee noticed a large room with a desk and several chairs. On the wall behind the desk was a large board, covered in notes. But that wasn’t what had attracted his attention.
In front of the board was a floating, red and white, bird like pokémon. One he knew well. She was wearing a white hat with a red cross on the front of it and was holding a clipboard. Worriedly, she looked down at her clipboard and then back up to one of the notes. Eevee couldn’t believe his eyes. It was Latias!
Suddenly, Eevee felt a yank on the back of his armor. He fell back and found that Charmander had pulled him back through the doorway.
“What the heck was that for?” Eevee asked.
“Sorry Eevee.” Charmander replied, “But I couldn’t let you expose yourself like that.”
“Like what?” Eevee asked as he stood back up.
“You really don’t know how close you were to that nurse do you?”
“What are you talking about? I was right here.”
“No, you were halfway over to her.”
Eevee looked back in just in time to see Latias turning back to the board with a confused look. She must have heard them.
“Eevee, that’s not our Latias.” Charmander said, “The Latias we know is back in our world.”
“But she’s-” Eevee began.
“No, she’s not the same pokémon.” Charmander cut him off, “This is not the Latias we know.”
Eevee watched as Latias floated away into another room and sighed, “I’m sorry.”
Charmander gave him a grin and replied, “Just try to be more careful ok?”
Eevee nodded and followed Charmander back to Vulpix and Nidorina.
“What took you two?” Vulpix asked.
“Eevee thought he saw someone from our world.” Charmander said, “He thought that he saw our Latias.”
Vulpix looked to Eevee and sighed, “Look, I don’t know if you realize it fully or not, but you’re supposed to be dead. Everyone thinks you two died in the collision.”
Eevee nodded and followed, but his mind was still turning back to the nurse.
“If that Latias thinks I’m dead, would she think that I left her alone for these years if I tried to approach her?” Eevee wondered, “Or did we even meet yet?”
After a few minutes of wandering the four came to a separation of hallways. And lucky them, there were exactly four different ways to go.
“Ok, we’ll need to split up.” Vulpix said, “Everyone have an emergency escape orb?”
The others nodded. Eevee felt the orb sitting on top of the rest of the supplies he was carrying. They had packed light, only taking a few Oran berries, one escape orb, a smaller roll-call orb, and two bottles of ether.
“Ok, I’ll take the left most hall.” Vulpix said, “Nidorina, you take the one to the right of the one I’m going down. Charmander, you take that middle one. Eevee, you get the last one. If you get into trouble, just run, do not engage unless you have to.”
The others nodded and ran down the hallways.
As Eevee walked, he came across a set of double doors. Curious, he peeked inside. The room was dark. So, he tried to locate something to light up the room. Usually, he would have just had Charmander lead, using fire on the end of his tail to light up the room. But now his partner was down another hallway.
As he blindly groped at the walls, his hands found a switch. Flicking it, Eevee found that he was in a bedroom. Two beds lay in the middle of the room. On them were clips for paper. He was in a hospital room. Eevee turned and flicked the lights back off.
As he continued down the hallway, the fox pokémon began to wonder if this was a hospital and not some sort of base. A nurse, a hospital room for over night patients, it sure seemed like one. But if it was, why did they have guards?
Eevee opened a second set of doors and his eyes widened. Pokémon of all kinds were fighting in this room. Their attacks striking training dummies as well as fighting with live opponents. Eevee realized that they were indeed in a base. Not a team base, but some sort of an outpost.
As he began to back out, the others in the room suddenly noticed him. As they turned to him the fox pokémon felt their eyes beginning to burn into him. They knew he wasn’t one of them.
“Intruder alert!” Someone yelled, “Get him!”
The pokémon attacked him. Eevee did what he did best when he was out numbered and alone. He turned tail and ran!
Eevee sped down the hallway, hoping that he could find another door to safety. He glanced back and saw the tens of opponents following him, yelling like maniacs and using long ranged attacks to get him.
“I’ve got to lose these guys and fast.” The eevee thought to himself as he spotted another door.
He yanked it open and jumped inside just as a fireball, a bolt of electric energy, and multiple streams of high pressure water passed where his head had been seconds earlier. As he stood up and closed the door, Eevee heard a shard gasp. As he pressed against the door to keep it closed, he saw that he was in a locker room, but the only other one in it was a floating red and white pokémon.
Startled, she had backed herself up against the wall, slowly moving along it.
“No, stay back!” Latias cried.
“I’m not going to hurt you.” Eevee said as he felt the door trying to open.
He grunted as he put more force against the door to hold it shut as Latias backed herself into a corner. Her fear filled eyes regarded the eevee as a threat. She knew that he could easily defeat her because of the symbol on his armor. Just as Absol had known, she knew that Eevee was a team leader.
Eevee spotted a large rod lying nearby and barred the door with it.
“That ought to hold them.” He thought as he backed away from it.
Then the door shook as it was hit from the other side. Eevee knew he didn’t stand a chance if they broke through unless he took a drastic measure and used an attack that could easily render him completely helpless.
“Look, I need your help.” Eevee said.
“Why would I help you?” Latias asked.
“Because if you don’t I could die from what I’m probably going to have to do.” Eevee replied shooting her a begging glance as the pokémon outside slammed against the door once again.
Latias didn’t want to help, but it was her duty as a nurse to help those in need. She nodded.
The door finally flew inward. As the opponents outside flooded into the locker room, Eevee put his hands behind his back, cupping them.
“HYPER BEAM!” The fox pokémon yelled.
Between his cupped hands grew a ball of golden energy, a shifting sphere of raw power drawn from deep within Eevee. As the energy grew, Eevee’s eyes locked onto who he was going to attack first. Once the beam hit the first of his opponents, it would plow through all of them, forcing them back into the wall.
The fox pokémon cried out as he unleashed the attack. A beam of powerful golden energy shot from his hands and into the crowd, taking most of them out. His enemies were thrown back as the beam shot through them and into the hallway, destroying the wall on the opposite side and plowing through to the next few hallways.
As Eevee strained to keep his focus on the beam, he felt his body weakening with every passing second. He couldn’t sustain the blast for much longer. Finally, the beam dissipated. Eevee glanced around and saw that all his adversaries were knocked out. He looked to Latias to find her shaking with fear.
Eevee couldn’t hold himself up any longer. The attack had drained him of every last bit of energy his body could muster. He fell to his knees. Then, as if in slow motion, hit the floor. Everything went black.
As he lay, Eevee’s body began to convulse violently as he began gasping for breath. Latias watched in horror as the pokémon before her slipped into a seizure. Immediately, she tried to hold him down. Knowing that she couldn’t save him alone, she cried out for help.
Charmander had been wandering down a hallway when he had heard the sound of a growing roar. He moved quickly and watched as a beam of golden energy shot through the walls of the hallway, destroying them completely. In shock, the lizard pokémon got to his feet and looked into the hole just in time to see Eevee fall to the ground and begin convulsing.
“Oh no.” the charmander said to himself, and then he leapt through the destroyed walls and rushed to his friends side.
Latias was already trying to hold down his upper body, so Charmander grabbed his legs and kept them from thrashing. He yelled out for help as well and Vulpix appeared in the holes in the wall. Nidorina was already jumping through the holes to reach them.
“I can’t leave you alone can I?” She asked as she and Nidorina held down Eevee as well.
After what seemed like an eternity, Eevee’s body stopped moving. He lay still as Charmander put his head to his friend’s chest. He listened carefully and heard the sound of his heart beating wildly.
“He’s still alive.” Charmander sighed, “Oh man…”
“What the hell was that?” Vulpix asked as she panted.
“A curse that came with a gift.” Charmander replied solemnly.
“In our words?” Nidorina asked.
“Eevee has the ability to use the hyper beam.” Charmander explained, “But with that power came one hell of a curse. If he goes over his limit of power, he could lose his life. From what Ninetails explained to us after he learned about Eevee having this power, Eevee has a limited number of shots with this attack. In our world, that limit is five before the loss of energy causes his body to go into a seizure. Apparently here his limit is only one.”
“So that attack causes him to do that?” Vulpix asked.
“Yeah.” Charmander replied sadly.
He looked over and saw Latias looking over Eevee. She had already removed his chest armor and had a hand at his neck.
“You’re a nurse right?” Charmander asked.
“I’m really only an assistant.” Latias replied as she lifted Eevee’s head up, “But yes, I am.”
Charmander looked to Vulpix and Nidorina, “Well you did say we needed medical help.”
“That I did.” Vulpix smiled.
“Let’s see if she wants to help us.” Charmander replied.
Vulpix nodded once and Nidorina knocked Latias out with a swift double kick.
“Oh come on, you know that’s not what I meant!” Charmander cried.
“Yeah, but it worked.” Vulpix replied, “Besides, one way or another we need medics. We know she won’t follow us willingly, so I figure we take her back and see how she reacts to what her ruler’s teams did to many of our friends and allies in the mines. If she doesn’t want to help, we’ll let her go home.”
Charmander sighed. He knew this wasn’t how he and Eevee did things, but he wasn’t going to argue.
Vulpix took an orb from her pack. Nidorina pulled the unconscious Latias and Eevee to the orb as Vulpix activated it. Seconds later, the team was gone, leaving only the KOed forms of the ones who had forced Eevee to use his most powerful attack.
When Eevee opened his eyes again, he found that he was lying in a cot. His armor had been removed. Looking around, he knew that he was back in the mines the Nexus team called home.
“Eevee! You’re alright!” he heard a familiar voice cry.
Eevee found himself being hugged tightly by Charmander.
“What happened?” Eevee asked when his friend released him.
“That’s exactly what I was going to ask you.” Another voice said.
Blakii walked into the room, his dark armor blending in well to the shadows in the room. Beside him was Latias. The female pokémon was carrying a tray with food and a thermometer.
“Please tell me that’s going in my mouth.” Eevee said when he spied it.
Latias smiled, “Yes, it is.”
Eevee couldn’t help but smile back.
As she took his temperature, Charmander explained that Eevee had blacked out after unleashing the powerful hyper beam and then he had gone into a seizure.
After Latias took the thermometer out of his mouth, Eevee replied, “So how’d you get here Latias?”
“To be honest, I don’t want to know.” She replied, then more quietly, “I think they knocked me out.”
Eevee looked to Charmander, who nodded sadly, “Yeah, we did. But once Latias saw the injured, she said that she’d stay and help us as a medic. That was a couple of days ago.”
“A couple of days?!” Eevee cried in surprise.
“Yeah. I’m glad you’re a fast healer.” Blakii said.
“Why?” Eevee asked.
“Because in a few more days, we’ll be fighting for our lives.” Blakii replied sadly, “Gengar’s ordered a full scale strike against us. Even as we speak he’s preparing an army. But I do have good news.”
“What’s the good news?” Eevee asked.
“One, I’ve managed to call in a few favors owed to us by some very powerful pokémon. You remember Groudon. Well, it’s offered to help us overthrow that tyrant. Same with the legendary bird trio as well as many other powerful legends of our world. Two, we’ve got word from a spy on the inside that Gengar and Kimori will be leading the charge. If we can take them down, it’s over.” Blakii said.
Eevee sat up and asked, “Charm?”
“I’ll go with whatever you say we’ll do.” Charmander replied.
Eevee smiled and said, “Ok Blakii, what do you need us to do?”
