Description
Not only by counting the number of growth rings can determine the age of a tree, but interpreting the spacing of growth rings can tell us much about it's life. How can we understand the mind if not looking backwards and examining our past. Trough time, our mind has become a mind within a mind - an endless journey of nested personalities.

I've always been fascinated by the russian Matryoska dolls. The concept of nesting dolls, growth rings and onions is with me when I think of age and personality.

do you know mikael kvium? some of your work (this piece for one) reminds me of him - and that is meant as a huge compliment

egilpaulsen In reply to idrawthelines [2008-05-07 12:59:13 +0000 UTC]
Yes I know him. I actually have a print of the painting "Dumrian" on my wall.
I think that is a great compliment, but I can't really see it in this picture myself. Perhaps because I haven't seen much of his work. But I like his style and themes

i can't say precisely what makes me think of him. but it's like you use the same implements (in lack of better words) as he do β even if the concept is different. if for example you compare with:
the sculls in the corners of this painting [link]
the people in this (and ignore the use of colors) [link]
and the entire painting pay back (unfortunally i could only find this scetch) [link]
i definitely see some resemblance. in other words: keep up the good work

that was some interesting pointers Thank you for showing his work too! His way of telling the story works perfectly for me. No wonder there are some resemblances

Wonderful idea! It's well executed too. It's simple but very efficient.
I bet all of us feel like a matryoska doll once in a while, and sometimes one need some extra layers to feel stronger.

And this is WHY you're one of my favorite artist here
I think we're someone else preserved on every "piece of time" always changing, we're somewhat distended on time, but for me time isn't lineal, it isn't continuous, it's concentrated in a point where everything is happening at the same "time". I've been playing with the concept of time lately, so this is very inspiring for me

egilpaulsen In reply to Damaged-Fractal [2008-04-23 14:40:55 +0000 UTC]
thanks a lot I agree. time is only defined by the things that were a part of a particular moment. I have different intepretations of time though, here is another if it helps [link]

I've always liked matryoshka/nesting dolls too.
The drawing is lovely and the concept interesting. I like how there appears to be a part of a tree & it's rings circling around the creature's neck. Now, if I have this right (the connection of the two), then I also like the whole "mind within a mind" thing and that the skulls are stacked in one hand, with the top of one sliced off in the other.

Yes. they fit all into each other. When detached, the little child looks at his own ghost in front of him in time
