And so it begins.

The black mare glowered at the outside world from the depths of her stall, bay colt attached to her flank. It was one thing to imagine that Sheva's temper had soured with age, and yet worsened further when she was with foal. She was a good mother at least - perhaps a little too good. Getting near her foals was always a touchy thing. Birthing her was always interesting, read: dangerous.

So it came as no surprise that she was behaving like this at the new colt's first competition. He was far too young to be weaned of his mother's milk just yet, so the pair would be entering the ring together: no doubt an eye catching duo. Little Sham would learn much from his mother regardless: she was the queen of halter classes, so hopefully she wouldn't steal the show. His bright coat was sure to draw the eye next to her ebony pelt regardless.

It was a realization that had been sneaking up on the staff gradually. He was a colt, he was young, they'd said. He'd learn. Sham was certainly a very physical little animal: he loved to throw his weight around and tended to boss Rubaa's spotty filly around something shocking: rounding her up and chasing her around the pasture whilst snorting and causing a ruckus like a tiny stallion.

He was a biter too: something all the staff who'd worked with him hoped he would grow out of very quickly. But it wasn't until they tried to properly handle him that they thought there might be something more volatile in his personality.

Jamie wasn't sure even his infamous dam had put up such a fuss being loaded into a trailer. Even on her arrival after being cooped up in quarantine for days hadn't compared to the colt's behavior as he learned he was supposed to follow his mother's disappearing rump up the ramp. Kicking and screaming didn't even begin to cover it. He didn't seem particularly frightened either: just angry and wild. The constant stream of abuse lulled with a swift nip from his dam during the journey, but returned as soon as he came to be unloaded. Now he was lying in wait in his stall, after being herded in there by three people from the Willowglen team. Sheva was notorious for putting on tantrums at the drop of the hat, but this colt truly was a demon.
