Ehetere — How I Shade

Description In case anyone is curious about how I shade my horses. I don't normally greyscale, but you get the idea. I put the darkest colour beneath everything as the shadow layer and then just highlight on top of that. This is for a reference, don't steal etc.

Question when you put the shadow layer down does it not matter if you cant see the detail lines?

Typically no, though I guess it depends on personal preference

This is such a great idea! And it's not overly complicated. I love this.
I shall have to try this shading sometime, my shading is terrible but I do like highlighting.

hmm...the secrets of ehetere explained =3 this is very nice work xD i love the muscle definition you get coloring this way. and yer coloring is so smooth i use six or seven different shades to color my horses, except for sarrah who has a two-toned coat...i use around 24 for her mind if i try coloring like this sometime?

Feel free! I've just never done a tutorial before because anyone I've shown so far has gone 'no thanks!' lol There's only one level of shading on the shoulder muscles, but I appreciate the compliment none the less.
I'd love to see how it works out for you

Ps. Coming to you from the cyclone ravaged Queensland, Australia. We have the little electricity network that could!

ah, i see know where the depth of your shadows come. perhaps the reason my drawings often seem one dimensional (no matter how long a shade for) is the fact i start on a mid-tone. -food for thought- thanks.

Ehetere In reply to jazz-mentality [2011-02-02 06:38:12 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! My method is a bit unorthodox, as most people like to start mid tone, add shadows and then highlights. But shadows and I don't get along so highlights all the way it is
It really depends on how you see shapes - I have to add in mid tones before I get to the true highlights, so I guess I'm just using the three different levels of colour in a different order. In theory you could do it in any order you wanted

Aaaahhhhhhhh YES I was wondering how u where shading lol I love your shading so this is great! Hopefully I can learn something from this just one question how do u make it look like round and like a muscle?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ehetere In reply to AutumnRainStables [2011-02-02 06:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Just shade on one side - I haven't defined the muscles here, but you put more highlights on one side and leave more contrast on the other side. Helps if you're using references for musculature, and can visualize the shape as you're drawing it
